Loial fights the Trollocs with his quarterstaff, creating a protected area for himself, and leans wearily on his staff after the battle.
Chapter 6 - The Hunt Begins

Loial listens to the discussion about the Prophecies and Callandor, confirming his knowledge of the Stone of Tear. He eagerly agrees to accompany Moiraine on the journey to find his friend Rand, citing his desire to write a book about the events.
Chapter 7 - The Way Out of the Mountains

Chapter 34 - A Different Dance

Loial excitedly tells Perrin that his bed is made of sung wood. He later informs Perrin that supper is ready and waits for him to join them.
Chapter 35 - The Falcon
Loial
Loial packs his belongings in the Ogier bed, joking about the adventure to set the mood for his book. He boards the boat yawning and follows Lan below deck.
Chapter 41 - A Hunter’s Oath

Loial remains in his cabin until the group disembarks, arriving on the dock breathless and clutching his saddlebags. He mounts his horse and rides into Illian, offering Perrin a silent, wordless reminder of the dangers of angering Aes Sedai.
Chapter 42 - Easing the Badger

Loial rides with the group, visibly distressed by the atmosphere of Illian and fearing he will be forced back to his stedding. He participates in the dinner but is distracted by his book until the fight breaks out, at which point he raises a chair to strike but puts it down after the enemies are dead.

Chapter 50 - The Hammer

Loial rides into Tear and comments on the defeat felt by the citizens. He is questioned by Moiraine about the Forsaken Be'lal, providing information from Ogier history about Be'lal's envy and titles. He initially considers leaving but decides to stay with the group, and is noted to have seen Aiel on the rooftops.
Chapter 53 - A Flow of the Spirit

Loial finds Perrin in the hallway, angry that he has been ordered to flee. He learns of Faile's condition, vehemently objects to trapping her, and agrees to guard Perrin's physical body while Perrin enters the dream to rescue her.
