Chapter 8 - Jarra

Summary

Perrin, Moiraine, Lan, and Loial arrive in Jarra and discover that Rand had visited the inn the previous day. After Moiraine refuses to heal Simion’s brother Noam, who has transformed into a wolf-like creature, Perrin convinces Simion to release him. The group secures rooms and meals, with Perrin requesting his food be brought to his room.

Characters

  • Perrin (good master, blacksmith) — Perrin rides into Jarra with his group and questions Simion to locate Rand, learning the Dragon had passed through eastward. He later confronts Moiraine about her silence and the dangers of ta'veren, and finally convinces Simion to release Noam from his cage, hiding his own yellow eyes to avoid Whitecloak attention.
  • Moiraine (good mistress, Aes Sedai) — Moiraine guides her party into Jarra and uses the Pattern to confirm Rand's presence in the village. She attempts to heal Noam but declares the man lost, refusing Simion's request, and later ignores the locked cage as she leaves the shed with Perrin.
  • Lan (good master) — Lan dismounts in Jarra and carries Moiraine's belongings to her room. He warns Perrin to keep his mouth shut and observes Moiraine's refusal to heal Noam with a cold, wolf-like intensity before letting her go with Perrin.
  • Loial (good master, Ogier) — Loial ducks under doorways and rumbles about Ogier history while Simion gapes at him. He sits with Simion in their room, explaining the peace of the stedding, while Perrin handles the inquiries about Rand and Noam.
  • Simion (sweeper) — Simion greets the travelers with yawns and excitement over recent weddings, revealing Rand's passage eastward. He begs Moiraine to heal his brother Noam, and after the healing fails, he accepts Perrin's advice to release Noam.
  • Harod (Master Harod, innkeeper) — Harod sits in the common room, initially too tired to notice the Ogier, then stares in disbelief at Loial. He agrees to provide a fine meal for the guests and later puzzles over the open cage of Noam.
  • Noam (Simion's brother) — Noam lies in a cage in a shed, transformed into a man-wolf with golden eyes. Moiraine declares him incurable, and Perrin opens the cage, allowing him to escape into the night on all fours.
