Chapter 6 - The Hunt Begins
Summary
Perrin Aybara and the group gather in Moiraine al’Thor’s hut to discuss Rand al’Thor’s mysterious disappearance, learning he left a note and followed a path created by the recent earthquake toward the Stone of Tear. Moiraine reveals that Rand’s recurring dreams are likely telepathic projections sent by the Dragon Reborn and identifies the sword in Perrin’s visions as Callandor, confirming their destination. She dismisses the injured Shienarans to Jehannah and orders Min to ride to Tar Valon, while retaining Perrin, Loial, Lan, and herself to pursue Rand, noting that Moiraine’s shielding and Lan’s bonding prevented them from receiving the dream visions.
Characters
- Perrin / Perrin Aybara (Lord Perrin, the blacksmith) — Perrin wakes to find Rand gone and confronts Moiraine about the Dragon’s departure, demanding answers about the Forsaken and the nature of the Prophecies. He recounts his dream of the sword Callandor, which Moiraine confirms as a telepathic message from Rand, and reluctantly agrees to join the pursuit party heading to Tear.
- Moiraine (Aes Sedai, Moiraine Sedai) — Moiraine manages the crisis of Rand’s departure, revealing to the group that the seals of Shayol Ghul are weakening and the Forsaken may be loose. She explains the mechanics of telepathic dreams, identifies Callandor as the goal in Tear, and issues orders to dispatch Uno and Min while she, Lan, Perrin, and Loial follow Rand.
- Lan (Warder, Gaidin) — Lan enters the hut to report that half the camp members dreamed of a sword, confirming the location of Rand’s journey. He is tasked with tracking Rand’s trail and sternly warns Perrin to watch his tongue.
- Uno (the one-eyed man) — Uno reports to the group that the earthquake created a viable path for horses into the valley where Rand escaped. He is dismissed by Moiraine with funds to travel to Jehannah, leaving the Shienarans behind as she deems only he fit for the hard ride.
- Masema (Shienaran) — Masema emerges from the hut earlier in the morning, muttering about spreading the word of the Dragon’s coming, and later confirms that he saw Rand holding the sword in his dreams during the report to Moiraine.
