Chapter 36 - Daughter of the Night

Summary

Perrin Aybara falls asleep on the merchant ship Snow Goose and enters Tel'aran'rhiod, where Hopper leads him to observe Ba'alzamon and Lanfear in their dream domain; Ba'alzamon executes a Darkfriend for failing to stop Mat Cauthon's escape from Tar Valon. Upon waking with a physical burn mark from the dream, Perrin reports the encounter to Moiraine Damodred, who remains cryptic but confirms the danger. Meanwhile, Rand al'Thor, camped in the hills near Remen, is ambushed by a merchant and her guards; he kills them all with a fiery sword and channels to kneel their bodies, resolving to find Callandor in Tear.

Characters

  • Perrin — Perrin falls asleep in the ship's cabin and enters a dream where Hopper guides him to a domain of mirrors where Ba'alzamon executes a Darkfriend. He wakes with a burn mark on his chest and reports the vision of Ba'alzamon and Lanfear to Moiraine, who examines him coldly before he leaves to find Zarine Bashere on deck.
  • Moiraine — Moiraine sits cross-legged on her cabin bed reading her notes when Perrin arrives to report his dream. She listens to his account without expression, warns him that women might attempt to gentle him based on his abilities, and refuses to heal the burn mark left by the dream, telling him to be careful before dismissing him.
  • Hopper (the wolf) — Hopper appears in Perrin's dream, leading him to the domain of the Forsaken. He communicates with Perrin through images and emotions, warning him to be careful, and then leaps into the air, soaring like an eagle before vanishing.
  • Rand (the Dragon Reborn) — Rand wakes from exhaustion in the hills and is confronted by a merchant and her guards. He kills them with a sword of fire, channels the One Power to make their bodies kneel before him, and then mounts a horse to ride toward Tear, vowing to end the taunting by finding Callandor.
  • Lan — Lan is seen on deck of the Snow Goose, looking over his horse Mandarb while Zarine sits nearby sharpening her knives.
  • Zarine — Zarine sits on a coil of rope near the railing, sharpening a knife and watching Perrin walk by.
  • Ba'alzamon — Ba'alzamon appears in Perrin's dream standing above a field of mirrors, dressed in black with silver lace. He executes a Darkfriend who allowed Mat Cauthon to escape Tar Valon by turning him into mist, and confronts Lanfear about her loyalty to the Dark One.
  • Lanfear — Lanfear appears in Perrin's dream clad in white and silver, sitting on a throne and claiming the domain as hers. She argues with Ba'alzamon, asserting her own greatness and her past claim over Lews Therin, before agreeing to serve the Dark One to avoid eternal pain.
