Chapter 55 - What Is Written in Prophecy

Summary

Rand al'Thor confronts the Forsaken Ba'alzamon in the Heart of the Stone, ultimately destroying him with Callandor before declaring himself the Dragon Reborn. In the dungeons, Egwene al’Vere enters Tel’aran’rhiod, locates Amico Nagoyin, and shields her before waking to find Mat Cauthon has successfully breached the cells and rescued her, Nynaeve, and Elayne. Meanwhile, in his dream, Perrin Aybara, as Young Bull, breaks the chains holding Faile in the Star inn's dining room dream, reuniting with her.

Characters

• Rand / Lews Therin / Kinslayer / Rand al'Thor (the Dragon Reborn, the Breaker of the World, the hunter) — Rand enters the Heart of the Stone and confronts Be’lal and Ba’zalmon, fighting with Callandor and saidin. He eventually kills Ba’zalmon, stabilizes reality, and proclaims himself the Dragon Reborn as the veiled men and defenders kneel to him.
• Ba'alzamon / Be'lal (the Forsaken) — Ba'alzamon, in the guise of Be'lal, threatens Rand and Moiraine in the Heart of the Stone. He is killed by Rand using Callandor, his body dissolving into shadow and smoke.
• Moiraine (woman, the Aes Sedai) — Moiraine arrives in the Heart of the Stone, destroys Be'lal with a bar of white fire, and is struck by lightning afterward, collapsing at the base of a column.
• Egwene — Egwene enters Tel’aran’rhiod, finds Amico Nagoyin in a cell, and shields her using the Power. She wakes in the physical cell as Mat Cauthon arrives to rescue them.
• Nynaeve — Nynaeve is present in the cell with Egwene and Elayne. She questions Mat's presence and later strikes Amico Nagoyin to break the binding spell keeping her awake.
• Elayne — Elayne is in the cell with Egwene and Nynaeve. She observes Amico Nagoyin and feels the effect of the shield being removed when Nynaeve strikes her.
• Mat / Matrim — Mat Cauthon enters the lower cells, finds Egwene, Nynaeve, and Elayne, and leads them out of the Stone through a small gate near the river while Juilin Sandar watches.
• Juilin Sandar / Juilin (thief-catcher, Master Sandar) — Juilin Sandar guides Mat to the cells and then betrays the women's location to Liandrin, though he is spared. He waits for Mat in the hall before they exit.
• Amico / Amico Nagoyin (Aes Sedai, Darkfriend) — Amico Nagoyin is found by Egwene in Tel’aran’rhiod and by Mat in the waking world. She is unable to move due to a spell until Nynaeve strikes her, breaking the hold.
• Perrin / Young Bull (my poor blacksmith, the blacksmith) — Perrin hunts in Tel’aran’rhiod, finds Faile chained to a falcon perch, and breaks her free despite being attacked by shadow falcons. He wakes in the Star inn with Faile kneeling over him.
• Faile (falcon, my falcon) — Faile appears in Perrin's dream chained to a falcon perch. After Perrin breaks her chains, she appears in the dining room of the Star inn, tending to his wounds.
• Hopper (wolf) — Hopper accompanies Perrin in the dream, leading him to the bronze doors and warning him of his weakening flesh.
