Chapter 35 - The Falcon

Summary

Perrin, Moiraine, Loial, and Lan escape Remen under cover of darkness, boarding a riverboat called the Snow Goose bound for Illian. On the deck, they are joined by Zarine Bashere, a young woman who reveals herself to be a Hunter of the Horn and proposes they search for the Horn of Valere in the Mountains of Mist, claiming it lies in the ruins of Manetheren. After a brief exchange regarding the Horn's location and her identity, she adopts the name Faile for her travels, and Perrin departs below deck, wary of her intentions and strange knowledge.

Characters

• Perrin — Perrin hurries to escape Remen, packing his gear and sneaking down to the stables where Lan arranges horses. He boards the Snow Goose, keeps a watchful eye on the animals, and confronts Zarine when she jumps aboard, dismissing her claims about the Horn and warning her that the Mountains of Mist are dangerous. He rejects her proposed name Mandarb for a stallion on the ship before she adopts the name Faile.
• Moiraine (Lady Alys) — Moiraine remains disguised under her hood, allowing Zarine to identify her only as a woman in a hooded cloak. She boards the Snow Goose with Lan and Loial without interacting directly with the new passenger.
• Loial — Loial packs his belongings in the Ogier bed, joking about the adventure to set the mood for his book. He boards the boat yawning and follows Lan below deck.
• Lan (the Warder) — Lan leads the group out of Remen, gives a coin to the stableman, and negotiates with the captain of the Snow Goose. He places the horses on the ship and escorts Moiraine below deck.
• Zarine / Mandarb / Zarine Bashere / Faile (Hunter of the Horn) — A young woman in divided skirts and a dark cloak jumps onto the Snow Goose, claiming she wants to go to Illian. She identifies herself as a Hunter of the Horn who took her oath at age six, asserts she is following the group to find the Horn in the Mountains of Mist, and proposes the name Faile for her travels, rejecting the name Mandarb.
• Stepper — Perrin's dun stallion, Stepper, is among the horses led behind Lan to the river and subsequently lifted aboard the Snow Goose.
• Mandarb — A black stallion tethered in a rope pen between the masts of the Snow Goose, noted by Perrin and Zarine during their conversation.
• Jaim Adarra (the captain) — The captain of the Snow Goose, described as a short, slight man with a tilted head. He accepts gold from Lan, hires sailors to load the horses, and manages the vessel's departure.
