Chapter 5 - Nightmares Walking

Summary

Perrin Aybara, roused from sleep by a dream of wolves, rushes outside to find the camp under attack by Trollocs and a Myrddraal. He fights off attackers to protect Leya, but she is killed by the Halfman before he can save her. Filled with the spirit of the wolf persona Young Bull, Perrin engages the Myrddraal, severing its head, and joins the wolf pack in hunting the remaining Trollocs until the battle is won. The survivors, including Perrin who is healed by Moiraine, gather to assess the losses, while Rand reveals his wound from Falme has reopened and Moiraine exhausts herself healing him.

Characters

• Perrin (Young Bull, blacksmith) — Perrin leaps from his bed to fight Trollocs, then encounters a Myrddraal who slays Leya. He takes on the wolf persona Young Bull to kill the Halfman and hunt the remaining Twisted Ones, later returning to his human self to receive healing from Moiraine and witness Rand's condition.
• Leya (Tuatha'an woman) — Leya witnesses the attack on the camp with horror and attempts to embrace a Myrddraal to distract it, but is killed instantly by its blade while Perrin struggles with the beast.
• Moiraine (Aes Sedai) — Moiraine fights Trollocs with a switch and saidin during the attack, then heals the surviving Shienarans and Perrin's wounds using an angreal, exhausting herself in the process.
• Lan (Warder) — Lan wakes fully clothed to lead the defense, fighting Trollocs and a Myrddraal, then supports Moiraine and carries her to rest after she heals everyone.
• Loial — Loial fights Trollocs with a large quarterstaff and observes the battle from the sidelines, later leaning on his staff as the survivors gather.
• Min — Min witnesses the battle and the aftermath, comforting Rand and expressing concern for Perrin, then watches as Moiraine heals Perrin and heals Rand's wound.
• Rand (Dragon Reborn, Lord Dragon) — Rand sits isolated after the battle, lamenting his lack of useful contribution to the fight and his inability to control the One Power, before revealing his Falme wound has reopened for Moiraine to heal.
• Uno (Shienaran) — Uno survives the battle with fatigue and orders the gathering of the dead wolf hides for the wounded, deferring to Perrin's command to bury the wolf corpses with their own.
• Masema (Shienaran) — Masema interprets the appearance of the wolves as a divine sign from the Dragon Reborn, prompting Uno to snap at him and Perrin to assert they fought for the camp.
• Morning Mist (wolf) — Morning Mist is the last surviving wolf of the pack, howling to the moon in mourning for her brothers who died killing the Myrddraal.
