Chapter 17 - The Red Sister

Summary

Elaida al'Vere confronts Nynaeve, Elayne, and Egwene, intimidating Elayne into submission and questioning the women about their disappearance and the Black Ajah. Sheriam Sedai interrupts the meeting to summon the trio to Mat Cauthon’s bedside, enforcing secrecy regarding the recent Gray Man incident and confirming that the Amyrlin Seat will oversee Mat’s healing.

Characters

• Elaida (Elaida Sedai) — Elaida confronts the three women, physically intimidating Elayne into obedience and interrogating them about their travels and the Black Ajah. Elayne apologizes to Elaida Sedai, claiming she forgot herself. Elaida questions them about Rand al’Thor, a youth from their village, before being interrupted by Sheriam.
• Nynaeve — Nynaeve attempts to deflect Elaida’s questioning by citing the Amyrlin’s orders, maintains a firm gaze, and questions Sheriam about the Gray Man's death.
• Egwene — Egwene listens to Elaida’s interrogation, carefully constructs a truthful-yet-deceptive answer regarding their journey, and expresses shock that the Amyrlin will heal Mat.
• Elayne (Daughter-Heir of Andor) — Elayne stands silently under Elaida’s glare, briefly defies her before succumbing to intimidation, and learns of her impending raise to Accepted status.
• Sheriam / Sheriam Sedai (Mistress of Novices) — Sheriam interrupts Elaida to summon the women to Mat, reprimands them for discussing the Gray Man, and confirms that the Amyrlin will see to Mat's healing.
