Chapter 53 - A Flow of the Spirit

Summary

Perrin Aybara, Moiraine Sedai, Lan Mandragoran, and Loial converge in the Star inn after Moiraine confirms Rand al'Thor is in Tear and that the city is destabilizing. They discover Zarine Bashere, now calling herself Faile, collapsed in a dining room, trapped by a Spirit ter'angreal hedgehog that has pulled her consciousness into a dream, leaving her body in a death-like sleep. After a tense confrontation with the innkeeper Jurah Haret regarding the trap's origin, Moiraine realizes Zarine is trapped in Tel'aran'rhiod and warns that her body will die if she is not retrieved. Refusing to leave her behind, Perrin enters the dream world through the ter'angreal, transformed into his wolf persona Young Bull, accompanied by the wolf Hopper as they begin to hunt for Faile within the dreamscape.

Characters

  • Perrin — Perrin returns to the inn tired from smithing and meets Moiraine and Lan in the hallway, where he learns of Rand's presence and a deadly trap awaiting Zarine. After finding Faile comatose, he argues with Moiraine, then enters the wolf dream alongside Loial to search for her, transforming into the wolf Young Bull and armed with his hammer.
  • Moiraine (the Aes Sedai) — Moiraine arrives at the inn to announce that Rand is in Tear, then leads the group to the dining room to find Zarine trapped by a Spirit ter'angreal. She identifies the nature of the trap, questions the innkeeper Haret, and explains that Zarine's soul is trapped in a dream, warning Perrin that her body will die if she is not retrieved.
  • Lan (the Warder, Gaidin) — Lan accompanies Moiraine to the inn, provides details about the chaotic events in Tear indicating Rand's influence, and drags the terrified innkeeper Jurah Haret to identify who set the trap. He agrees with Moiraine that the Forsaken knows of them and prepares to leave for the Stone with Moiraine.
  • Loial — Loial finds Perrin in the hallway, angry that he has been ordered to flee. He learns of Faile's condition, vehemently objects to trapping her, and agrees to guard Perrin's physical body while Perrin enters the dream to rescue her.
  • Zarine / Faile (the falcon) — Zarine rushes into the private dining room and collapses, lying motionless on the floor with her soul trapped in a dream. As she lies there, she appears small and helpless to Perrin standing before her, who then seeks to enter the dream to find her.
  • Hopper — The wolf Hopper appears in the dream world to greet Perrin, warning him of the dangers of the dreamscape and the avoidance of other wolves. He agrees to hunt with Perrin to find the trapped Faile.
  • Haret (Master Haret, the innkeeper) — Juran Haret is dragged into the hallway by Lan and interrogated by Moiraine about who entered the reserved dining room. He confesses that two Ladies left a hedgehog as a surprise for Moiraine, then flees down the stairs in terror.
