Chapter 34 - A Different Dance

Summary

Perrin and his group arrive in Remen and learn of a man proclaiming the Dragon in Ghealdan, which Moiraine identifies as Masema. Perrin, troubled by a mysterious staring stranger and a caged Aiel, releases an Aiel warrior named Gaul from a gibbet in the town square. When Whitecloaks attack, Gaul and Perrin fight them off, after which Gaul departs for Tear while Perrin is reprimanded by Lan for the indiscretion.

Characters

  • Furlan (innkeeper) — The innkeeper guides the group to their rooms, babbling about local news and revealing that his Ogier bed is made of sung wood. He later comments on Moiraine's temperament and directs Perrin to his quarters.

  • Gaul (Shae’en M’taal, Stone Dog) — The Aiel warrior, caged in the square, is freed by Perrin. He introduces himself as a Shaarad Aiel searching for the Dragon. He effortlessly defeats the Whitecloaks who attack them and departs for Tear, leaving Perrin to deal with the aftermath.
  • Orban (Lord Orban) — The Hunter of the Horn sits in the inn with his leg propped up, boasting to the crowd about his past exploits against the Aiel.
  • Perrin (wetlander, blacksmith) — Perrin worries about a staring stranger and Min's visions before releasing the caged Aiel Gaul. He fights alongside Gaul against the Whitecloaks, killing several men with his axe, and is then angrily reprimanded by Lan for the danger caused.
