Chapter 27 - Tel’aran’rhiod

Summary

Egwene uses Verin's ring to enter Tel'aran'rhiod, initially finding a peaceful dreamscape that shifts to a vision of Perrin bound by a wolf, and then a troubled Rand who rejects her presence. Determined to find answers, she commands the ring to take her to a location with secrets, arriving in a great hall where an old woman named Silvie reveals the presence of the sword Callandor and mocks the Forsaken. After being attacked by an unseen force in the dream, Egwene wakes in pain and recounts her experiences to Nynaeve and Elayne; the trio concludes the Black Ajah is in Tear and resolves to leave Tar Valon immediately to pursue them.

Characters

  • Egwene — Egwene enters Tel'aran'rhiod via a stone ring, viewing visions of Perrin and Rand before forcing the ring to reveal the sword Callandor and an old woman named Silvie. After a painful attack in the dream, she returns to her body and shares the intelligence regarding Callandor and Tear with Nynaeve and Elayne, deciding to leave the White Tower with them.
  • Nynaeve — Nynaeve stays awake to guard Egwene as she sleeps in the World of Dreams, waking in alarm when Egwene screams in pain. Upon Egwene's return, Nynaeve helps secure the group's return to reality, confirms the location of the Black Ajah based on Egwene's report, and agrees to the plan to flee Tar Valon on a trading ship.
  • Elayne — Elayne sits guard during Egwene's dream, lighting candles to check on her when she wakes. She expresses concern for Rand but agrees to join the escape plan, planning to send a letter to her mother without revealing their true destination to the Amyrlin.
  • Silvie (poor old Silvie) — An ugly, hobbling old woman who calls herself a servant in the Heart of the Stone, Silvie reveals the identity of the floating sword Callandor and mocks Ishamael before attacking Egwene with intense pain.
  • Perrin — In Egwene's dream, Perrin appears bound by a black chain to a stone pillar in a dark inn room, guarded by the wolf Hopper, before the door slams shut and the vision ends.
  • Rand — In Egwene's dream, Rand sits by a magical fire, smoking a pipe and speaking angrily to the darkness about his mother, father, and a 'pretty girl.' He manifests a sword of flame and threatens Egwene before she flees the vision.
  • Hopper — In Egwene's dream, the wolf Hopper stands guard near Perrin, growling with bared teeth until Perrin commands him to stay back as Egwene approaches.
