Lan leads the initial defense against the Trollocs, engaging in deadly combat with both Shadowspawn and a Myrddraal, and later carries the exhausted Moiraine to her hut.

Chapter 6 - The Hunt Begins

Lan enters the hut with information that half the group dreamed of swords, confirming the group's suspicion. He later closes the door on Min's attempt to send a message to Nynaeve, stating he will deliver it himself.

Chapter 7 - The Way Out of the Mountains

Scouts the path on Mandarb, leaving signs for the group to follow and avoiding detection by his stealthy approach. He refuses to deliver a package to a Green sister named Myrelle, warns Perrin against losing the habit of obedience, and disappears back to Moiraine in the fading light.

Lan dismounts with the group, takes command of the luggage, and secures a small room next to Moiraine. He confronts Perrin for his loose tongue, agrees with Moiraine's refusal to heal Noam, and warns Perrin to protect her during the visit to the shed.

Chapter 33 - Within the Weave

Chapter 41 - A Hunter’s Oath

Lan sits on the deck examining his sword with visible amusement at the tension between Moiraine and Zarine, remaining impassive to their mutual irritation. He later questions Zarine about her resolve and rides ahead into Illian with the group, maintaining his stoic demeanor.

Lan scouts ahead and secures rooms for the group at the inn. He stands by Moiraine during the attack, searching the bodies of the Gray Men afterward. He confronts Moiraine about her decision to leave alone but ultimately yields to her command to take Perrin and escape.

Lan leads the search for the Darkhound, discovering its tracks in stone, and orders Zarine to swear an oath of obedience or leave. He prepares his gear to ride alone to find Moiraine, answering Perrin's question about the nature of the threat with a grim warning before instructing him to sleep.

Lan accompanies the group into Tear and checks into the Star inn. He warns Zarine against using the name Aes Sedai publicly. He insists on going with Moiraine into the Stone rather than standing aside, then leaves to study the Stone of Tear while noting the presence of hidden Aiel on the city's rooftops.

Chapter 53 - A Flow of the Spirit

Lan accompanies Moiraine to the inn, provides details about the chaotic events in Tear indicating Rand's influence, and drags the terrified innkeeper Jurah Haret to identify who set the trap. He agrees with Moiraine that the Forsaken knows of them and prepares to leave for the Stone with Moiraine.
