Andrea steals jewels from the bride's trousseau, hires a cab to Louvres, then a horse to Compiègne, and checks into the Bell and Bottle inn under a false name. When police surround the inn, he attempts to escape via the chimney but falls into Eugénie's room, where he is captured. He surrenders calmly, drops his knife, and mockingly bids Eugénie farewell before being led away in handcuffs.
