Raen is the gray-haired leader of the Tinker band who greets Elyas and welcomes Perrin and Egwene to his fire. He passionately defends the Way of the Leaf, arguing against violence, and tells a somber story of an Aiel girl who died delivering a warning from the Blight.

Raen sente a presença de perigo no céu e no ar, o que obriga a uma partida antecipada do acampamento. Ele se despede de Elyas e dos outros, proferindo uma bênção solene sobre a maldade que ronda o mundo e o caminho até os stedding, e realiza a cerimônia tradicional da canção.
