Chapter 11 - Tar Valon

Lies unconscious in a horse litter throughout the arrival in Tar Valon, his breathing a dry rasp. He is swiftly carried away by two laborers summoned by Sheriam after Verin declares him dangerously ill.

Chapter 18 - Healing

Mat

Mat lies on the stone table as the Aes Sedai heal him, struggling against the dagger's bond. He shouts battle commands in the Old Tongue of Manetheren and orders the Aes Sedai to release him before the dagger is trapped and he collapses.

Chapter 19 - Awakening

Mat wakes in a lavish room with a plaster ceiling, his mind clouded by dreams of Manetheren and memories of Shadar Logoth. He examines his emaciated reflection, eats a massive meal of beef, vegetables, and cheese, and reasons his way through his situation, concluding he is in the White Tower and must find Egwene and Nynaeve. After finishing all the food, he remembers blowing the Horn of Valere and braces for the person knocking at his door.

Chapter 20 - Visitations

Mat wakes to find himself naked and is visited by the beautiful Selene, who warns him about the Aes Sedai's intentions and the presence of the Black Ajah. After Selene leaves, Siuan Sanche and Leane Bashere arrive; Siuan reveals Mat's unique link to the Horn of Valere and forbids him from speaking of it, ensuring he stays in Tar Valon to recover under their control.

Chapter 24 - Scouting and Discoveries

Mat wakes, eats, and exits his room to scout escape routes. He tricks guardsmen about leaving the city and alienates a former acquaintance, Else Grinwell, before finding a practice yard. There, he challenges Galad and Gawyn to a quarterstaff fight, wins decisively using Old Tongue reflexes and immense luck, and then flees the scene while suffering from extreme hunger and exhaustion.

Chapter 28 - A Way Out

Mat finishes a snack and interacts with his visitors, initially resisting their attempts to send him on an errand by citing the Amyrlin's restrictions. After Nynaeve channels to verify his health, he accepts the letter of authority to deliver Elayne's letter to Queen Morgase, celebrating his escape from Tar Valon.

Chapter 30 - The First Toss

Escapes his room with stored food and his quarterstaff, gambles extensively in Southharbor taverns with impossible luck, and realizes his connection to the Shadar Logoth dagger is the source. He fights off a verbal threat regarding the Dark One, evades footpads by climbing across roofs, and accidentally kills an attacker by flipping them both over a bridge railing, surviving the fall while the attacker dies by his own weapon. He then seeks refuge at an inn.

Chapter 31 - The Woman of Tanchico

Mat enters the inn and sits at a table, ordering wine and three chickens while observing the distressed state of the gleeman Thom Merrilin. He questions Thom about his whereabouts and his knowledge of Rand's safety, then persuades Thom to flee Tar Valon for Caemlyn. After Thom leaves the room, Mat accepts a silver mark from the serving girl Saal and hurries out to join Thom, determined to catch the first ship out of the city.

Chapter 32 - The First Ship

Mat and Thom flee Tar Valon on the Gray Gull, bribing Captain Mallia with gold to secure a cabin. Mat kills two assassins with his quarterstaff while Thom kills a third, and he later uses dice to gamble, convinced his luck is supernatural rather than the result of the dice's weight. He manipulates Mallia’s political prejudices by suggesting the White Tower needs more Aes Sedai in the Stone of Tear, then sinks to his knees, consumed by fear and uncertainty after killing humans.

Chapter 40 - A Hero in the Night

Mat arrives in Aringill with Thom, observing the desperate refugee crisis. He struggles to find lodging, eventually bribing an innkeeper with a dice game to secure a stable and two horses. He drops from the loft to save Aludra from assassins, gifts her coins when she leaves for Lugard, and then rides out into the rain, resolving to never act like a hero again.

Chapter 43 - Shadowbrothers

Mat appears in Perrin's wolf dream, rattling a dice cup while gambling with Ba'alzamon, before the vision fades.

Chapter 44 - Hunted

Mat

Mat examines the explosive powder inside Aludra's fireworks at a campsite, annoying Thom. He is ambushed by a noblewoman and her men, uses a firework to distract them, and kills one attacker with his quarterstaff before Thom finishes off the others. He recognizes the dead crossbowman as the man who attacked him in Tar Valon.

Chapter 45 - Caemlyn

Mat / Mat Cauthon — aliases: the boy, ruffian, gutter scum

Mat arrives in Caemlyn with Thom and rides to the Royal Palace to deliver Elayne's letter, but the Palace Guard captain refuses entry, accusing him of being a trickster and ordering him to arrest him for being a Darkfriend. Mat escapes the guards and returns to The Queen's Blessing inn, where he explains his failed attempt to Gill and Thom, declaring his intent to find another way into the Palace despite the dangers.

Chapter 46 - A Message Out of the Shadow

Mat / Thom Grinwell — aliases: the boy, countryman

Mat climbs the palace wall, eavesdrops on Gaebril's plot to kill the girls, and is escorted by Tallanvor to Morgase. He presents Elayne's letter, lies about his origins to maintain his cover, and accepts a purse of gold from Gaebril before backing away.

Chapter 47 - To Race the Shadow

Mat

Escapes the Palace and lies to Tallanvor about his time in Tar Valon before returning to the inn to reveal Gaebril's assassination plot. He accepts Thom's advice to spread rumors and agrees to leave for Aringill, winning a dice game to assert his luck.

Chapter 49 - A Storm in Tear

Mat

Mat plays stones with Thom on the Swift, then docks in Tear during a heavy rainstorm to search for Egwene and Nynaeve. He confronts Comar at an inn, discovers Comar uses weighted dice via sleight of hand, kills Comar in a physical struggle after Comar's luck fails, and then continues his search for the girls with renewed urgency and a strategy of total randomness.

Chapter 52 - In Search of a Remedy

Mat drags the sick Thom to Mother Guenna, pays for medicines and information about his missing friends, and learns they have been taken to the Stone of Tear by High Lord Samon. He leaves Thom with the Wise Woman, punches a wall in frustration, and resolves to enter the fortress to rescue Egwene, Nynaeve, and Elayne.

Chapter 54 - Into the Stone

Mat — aliases: thief, gambler, nameless youngling

Mat Cauthon surveys the Stone of Tear from the rooftops and is intercepted by black-veiled Aiel, including Rhuarc and Gaul, before being aided by thief-catcher Juilin Sandar. He detonates a modified bundle of fireworks to blast open an arrowslit, infiltrates the fortress, and defeats several High Lords in combat, eventually following Sandar toward the cells.

Chapter 55 - What Is Written in Prophecy

Mat Cauthon enters the lower cells, finds Egwene, Nynaeve, and Elayne, and leads them out of the Stone through a small gate near the river while Juilin Sandar watches.

Chapter 56 - People of the Dragon

Mat — aliases: ta’veren, the sounder of the Horn of Valere

Mat Cauthon watches the city's celebrations from an arrowslit, reflects on Rand's victory and the presence of the Aiel, and questions Moiraine and the women about the implications of the Stone's fall and the survival of the Dark One. He is later confronted by Berelain and informed by Moiraine that he remains a crucial thread in the Pattern.
