Mat finds Rand and Perrin in the storeroom, discussing his dice winnings and the dangers of his tainted dagger. He argues with Rand about Aes Sedai and trust, then leaves with Perrin and Loial after Rand insults him.
Chapter 6 - Dark Prophecy

Mat lies unconscious on the dungeon floor beside Egwene with labored breathing and a pale face. Moiraine notes his dagger is missing and he is taken to the Amyrlin Seat's chambers for Healing.
Chapter 7 - Blood Calls Blood

Mat lies unconscious on a bed in the infirmary, recovering from the Healing, and briefly stirs to speak with Perrin before falling back into deep sleep.
Chapter 10 - The Hunt Begins

Mat rides at the rear with Perrin, keeping his distance from Rand. He enters a house in the abandoned village to check for inhabitants and later joins the group at the square to stare in disbelief at the dead Myrddraal.
Chapter 11 - Glimmers of the Pattern

Mat discovers the banner and Rand's confession, panics at the realization that Rand can channel, and runs away to sleep as far from his friend as possible, fearing for their lives.
Chapter 14 - Wolfbrother
Mat
Mat mutters to himself and argues with Uno about the vanishing of the group, then questions Perrin's health and new 'sniffer' claim with skepticism and bitterness while riding south with the party.
Chapter 28 - A New Thread in the Pattern

Mat rides with his bow and juggling balls, looking pale and withdrawn as he watches Urien. He notes the resemblance between Rand and the Aiel, later mutters at the Aes Sedai symbol drawn in the dirt, and asks Perrin if Urien was referring to Rand.
Chapter 30 - Daes Dae’mar

Mat appears at the scene of the fire, pale and drawn but grinning weakly, leading his horse through the crowd with his bow strung across his back.
Chapter 31 - On the Scent
Mat
Mat arrives with Ingtar's party, appearing pale and sick but managing a grin. He explains how Verin coerced a clerk into guiding them to Rand and later juggles eggs while eating ravenously, showing less fear of Rand's power. He questions the wisdom of giving the Horn to King Galldrian and insists on retrieving the Shadar Logoth dagger as well.
Chapter 32 - Dangerous Words

Mat enters the manor pretending to be Rand’s servant, grumbling about the role, and disappears toward the kitchens with Hurin. He is later reported by Hurin to have fallen and twisted his knee, a fabrication used to facilitate Rand's exit.
Chapter 33 - A Message from the Dark
Mat — aliases: servant
Mat pretends to be Rand’s servant to enter the manor and later delivers messages between Rand and Verin. He expresses fear of the Ways and concern over the dangerous dagger, but agrees to join the pursuit to Toman Head.
Chapter 35 - Stedding Tsofu
Mat
Expresses eagerness to enter the stedding and mocks Loial's interest in Erith. He refuses to stay during the Aiel confrontation, then jokes with Rand and Perrin about Rand being an Aiel while waiting for the Elders.
Chapter 36 - Among the Elders
Mat
Mat jokes with Rand about Loial being married to an Ogier woman. He sits on the coping with his head in his hands at the Waygate, appearing worried. He shows hope when the topic of Portal Stones is raised, as it offers a faster route than riding west.
Chapter 37 - What Might Be
Mat
Mat is huddled in a ball during the surge, then desperately assures Rand he will keep his secret about Rand’s channeling. He rides west with the group, worried about Fain’s head start.
Chapter 41 - Disagreements
Mat
Shivering and gaunt, Mat complains about the weather and argues that Hurin's search is the best way to find the tainted dagger. Perrin questions why Fain brought the Horn to the area, while Mat cautions Rand against rushing to Falme.
Chapter 44 - Five Will Ride Forth
Mat
Mat accompanies Perrin and Hurin on the scout; Hurin finds the scent trail of Fain, and Perrin reports the presence of Whitecloaks. Mat returns to camp and agrees to join the infiltration party to find the tainted dagger.
Chapter 47 - The Grave Is No Bar to My Call
Mat
Mat carries the Horn of Valere and the Shadar Logoth dagger, sounds the Horn to summon the Heroes, and laughs as he blows wild notes to guide them into battle alongside Rand and Perrin.
