Chapter 42 - Falme

Summary

Nynaeve al'Meara and Elayne track a suspicious figure in Falme who Nynaeve believes is Padan Fain before observing the brutal subjugation of channelers by the Seanchan. Meanwhile, Egwene al'Vere endures training under the sul'dam Renna in a damane quarter, where she is visited by Min Farshaw and subsequently punished for channeling in secret, losing her name and her friend's visit as a result.

Characters

• Nynaeve — Nynaeve al'Meara and Elayne navigate the crowded streets of Falme, spotting a man in a bronze robe that Nynaeve suspects is Padan Fain. She observes the Seanchan patrols and the collared damane with disgust, plotting a rescue while hiding her growing hunger and anger.
• Elayne — Elayne al'Meara accompanies Nynaeve through the streets, having stolen apples from a merchant. She watches the Seanchan with contempt, while Nynaeve suggests that if Elayne cannot learn to be careful, it might be time to send her back to Caemlyn.
• Fain — A man wearing a rich bronze velvet robe of Seanchan cut is glimpsed by Nynaeve in the street before he disappears into the crowd, prompting her to suspect he is Padan Fain.
• Egwene / al'Vere (Tuli) — Egwene al'Vere channels a tiny trickle of Power to probe her collar and is visited by Min Farshaw, who offers an escape plan. After Renna discovers the channeling, Egwene is severely punished and forced to accept the name Tuli.
• Min — Min Farshaw visits Egwene in her damane quarters, showing off her Seanchan-style dress and offering a plan to escape via a ship captain. She gives Egwene her knife and vows to never leave her friend behind.
• Renna (sul'dam) — Renna, a sul'dam, monitors Egwene's activities and punishes her for channeling by forcing her to swear obedience and stripping her of her name, ordering Min to leave.
