Chapter 47 - The Grave Is No Bar to My Call

Summary

Rand al’Thor, Mat Cauthon, Perrin Aybara, and Hurin regroup on a hill overlooking Falme after Ingtar Shinowa stays behind to fight the Seanchan. Rand insists on returning to rescue Egwene, but the group is confronted by an invading army of Seanchan and Children of the Light. Mat blows the Horn of Valere, summoning a host of ancient heroes including Artur Hawkwing, Birgitte, and Gaidal Cain from the mist. Rand rides with the heroes into battle while simultaneously engaging in a spiritual duel with Ba’alzamon, eventually striking him down with his heron-mark sword despite being pierced by Ba'alzamon's staff. The battle between the Horned Heroes and the Seanchan rages in the mist-shrouded city below.

Characters

• Rand / Rand al'Thor (Lews Therin, Dragon) — Rand rides Red to the hill, learns Ingtar is dying, and decides to return to Falme to save Egwene. He watches Mat blow the Horn, sees the Heroes of the Horn appear, and rides into the mist to fight Ba'alzamon. He engages the Dark One's avatar in a spiritual duel, using the One Power and his sword to deliver a fatal blow while sustaining a mortal wound himself.
• Mat — Mat mounts his horse and carries the Horn of Valere and the Shadar Logoth dagger. He debates with Rand about returning to Falme before blowing the Horn of Valere, which summons the Heroes of the Horn. He rides into battle with the heroes, sounding the Horn and laughing despite the danger.
• Perrin — Perrin urges caution and points out the approaching armies. He dismounts to tie the Dragon's banner to a pole, which he carries into the mist. He rides forward into the battle.
• Hurin (sniffer) — Hurin warns of the approaching Whitecloaks. He rides into the mist and fights alongside the Heroes of the Horn.
• Red (bay stallion) — Red is Rand's bay stallion. He gallops to the hill, rears wildly during Rand's vision, and hurls Rand from his saddle when Rand is struck by Ba'alzamon, then disappears.
• Ba'alzamon (Father of Lies) — Ba'alzamon appears in the mist to confront Rand. He taunts Rand as Lews Therin and offers him power. They duel spiritually, with Ba'alzamon striking Rand with his staff. Rand counters by stabbing Ba'alzamon in the heart with his heron-mark blade, causing the Dark One's avatar to scream and the world to explode in fire.
• Artur Hawkwing — Artur Hawkwing leads the Heroes of the Horn out of the mist. He recognizes Rand as the Dragon and the banner. He commands the Horn to provide music and leads the charge against the Seanchan, fighting alongside Perrin.
• Birgitte — Birgitte rides with the Heroes of the Horn. She laughs at Rand's request to save Egwene and tests her bowstring before joining the charge into the fog.
• Gaidal Cain — Gaidal Cain rides with the Heroes of the Horn. He drops his reins to draw a sword in each hand and follows Hawkwing into battle.
• Rogosh Eagle-eye — Rogosh Eagle-eye rides with the Heroes of the Horn, described as a fatherly man with white hair and sharp eyes.
