Chapter 47 - The Grave Is No Bar to My Call

Summary

Mat Cauthon sounds the Horn of Valere, summoning a host of ancient Heroes led by Artur Hawkwing to battle against the Seanchan. Rand al'Thor rides into the mist to confront Ba'alzamon, engaging in a psychic and physical duel while using the void to channel the One Power, ultimately piercing the Shadowspawn's heart with his heron-mark sword to banish him. The Heroes of the Horn join the fray, turning the tide against the Seanchan forces in Falme, while Rand realizes the two battles are linked, forcing him to hold his own against his enemy to save Egwene.

Characters

  • Rand / Rand al'Thor — Rand rides to the hills above Falme, learns of Ingtar's sacrifice, and watches Mat sound the Horn to summon Heroes. He confronts Ba'alzamon in the mists, channeling the Power while maintaining the void, and finally kills the entity by piercing its heart with his heron-mark sword after realizing he must die to win.
  • Mat — Mat carries the Horn of Valere and the Shadar Logoth dagger, sounds the Horn to summon the Heroes, and laughs as he blows wild notes to guide them into battle alongside Rand and Perrin.
  • Perrin — Perrin ties the Dragon banner to a pole, rides with the Heroes of the Horn into the mist with his axe, and fights side-by-side with Artur Hawkwing against the Seanchan.
  • Hurin — Hurin refuses to stay behind, follows the Heroes into battle with his short sword and sword-breaker, and receives a commendation from Artur Hawkwing for his courage.
  • Ingtar — Ingtar shouts a final battle cry and engages the Seanchan forces to cover Rand's escape, sacrificing himself in the ensuing chaos.
  • Red — Red rears wildly during Rand's confrontation with Ba'alzamon and then disappears when Rand is thrown from his saddle into the mist.
  • Ba'alzamon — Ba'alzamon confronts Rand in the mists, taunting him with his past as Lews Therin and offering him power, before being struck through the heart by Rand's heron-mark sword and vanishing in an explosion of fire.
  • Artur Hawkwing — Artur Hawkwing rides at the head of the summoned Heroes, acknowledging Rand as the Dragon, and charges into the Seanchan lines alongside Perrin, turning the battle in their favor.
  • Rogosh (Rogosh Eagle-eye) — Rogosh Eagle-eye appears among the summoned Heroes, described as a fatherly man with white hair and sharp eyes, riding with the host.
  • Gaidal (Gaidal Cain) — Gaidal Cain draws two swords and rides with the Heroes, joining the charge against the Seanchan forces.
  • Birgitte — Birgitte, the Golden-haired bowwoman, laughs and tests her bowstring, then rides into battle with the other Heroes.
  • Domon / Bayle — Bayle Domon is seen in Rand's vision on his ship, looking fearful as he waits in the harbor while the battle rages.
