Chapter 11 - Glimmers of the Pattern

Summary

At the campsite, Ingtar informs Rand that he is second-in-command should Ingtar fall, presenting him with a canvas-wrapped bundle. Rand retreats to open the package and discovers the banner of Lews Therin Telamon, the Dragon. Mat Cauthon and Perrin Aybara find him, and after Rand reveals that he can channel the One Power, Mat flees in fear while Perrin advises him to run or bury the banner. Rand leaves the banner in his saddlebag and joins Loial and Hurin at the camp. Meanwhile, Padan Fain, having ordered his Trollocs to slaughter bound villagers in a nearby village, spares the surviving Darkfriends and guards a golden chest, staring north while anticipating a future confrontation with Rand.

  • Rand (Rand al'Thor) — Rand receives the bundle from Ingtar and secretly opens it to find the banner of the Dragon. He confesses his ability to channel to Mat and Perrin, causing Mat to flee and Perrin to urge him to leave, before finally stowing the banner in his saddlebag.
  • Mat — Mat discovers the banner and Rand's confession, panics at the realization that Rand can channel, and runs away to sleep as far from his friend as possible, fearing for their lives.

  • Fain (Padan Fain) — Padan Fain sits by a fire in the darkness, orders his Trollocs to kill the remaining villagers and his human Darkfriends, and secures a powerful golden chest, vowing to force Rand to come to him.
  • Red — Red, Rand's stallion, stands by his reins in the camp, and Rand later rubs him down, removes his saddle, and stuffs the wrapped banner into his saddlebags.
