Chapter 11 - Glimmers of the Pattern

Summary

Ingtar orders the camp established and reveals to Rand that he is designated second-in-command, entrusting him with a canvas-wrapped bundle from Moiraine. Rand later discovers the banner of Lews Therin inside the bundle and confronts Mat and Perrin about his emerging identity as the Dragon, leading to their fear and withdrawal. Rand then joins Loial and Hurin at the camp, hiding the banner in his saddlebags. Meanwhile, Padan Fain, having transformed himself and gained dominance over the Myrddraal, commands his Trollocs to slaughter the villagers he captured to slow the pursuers, while asserting absolute control over the remaining human Darkfriends who beg for their lives.

Characters

  • Uno — Uno argues heatedly with Ragan about seeing a woman before they found the Halfman, then serves as a scout under Ingtar's orders to track the quarry's movements.
  • Ragan — Uno helps transport the ferry across the river and examines tracks, reporting to Ingtar that there is no ambush.
  • Ingtar — Ingtar calls an early halt to set up a defensible camp, orders scouts, and informs Rand that Lord Agelmar appointed him as second-in-command, delivering a bundle from Moiraine and stating that the lances will follow Rand if he falls.
  • Rand (Rand al'Thor) — Rand receives the bundle and learns of his role as second-in-command, later discovering the Dragon's banner which he packs into his saddlebags. He confronts Mat and Perrin about channeling, causing them to leave him, then joins Loial and Hurin at camp before lying awake with anxiety.
  • Mat — Mat bursts into the clearing to see the banner, expresses horror at Rand's potential identity as the Dragon and the danger posed by his ability to channel, and eventually decides to sleep away from Rand due to fear.
  • Perrin — Perrin observes the banner and listens to Rand's confession, advising him to run and bury the banner, then departs to return to camp with a sense of foreboding.
  • Loial (the Ogier) — Loial sits on a stone examining markings on it, joins Hurin near the campfire, and offers companionship to Rand before they make their beds together.
  • Hurin — Hurin gives Rand a respectful nod, explains he was listening to Loial, and makes his bed beside Rand and Loial near the stone, staying silent during Rand's mood.
  • Fain / Padan Fain (the Fade) — Padan Fain, now dominant over his Trollocs and Darkfriends, commands the slaughter of villagers to slow the pursuers. He asserts control over the surviving humans, who beg for mercy, and prepares to open an ornate chest while vowing to catch Rand.
