Chapter 12 - Woven in the Pattern

Summary

Egwene al'Vere and Nynaeve al'Meara flee Fal Dara with the Amyrlin Seat's procession after an assassination attempt on the Amyrlin, traveling west toward Tar Valon. Along the way, Egwene receives a lesson on channeling control from Verin Sedai, which accidentally results in burning blankets due to Nynaeve's anger. As the group reaches Medo to board ships, Egwene learns that Moiraine has vanished and, troubled by a vivid dream sensing danger to Rand, she confides in Anaiya Sedai, who suggests Egwene may be a Dreamer.

Characters

  • Egwene / Egwene al'Vere — Egwene rides with the Aes Sedai procession out of Fal Dara, receives a controlled channeling lesson from Verin that goes awry for Nynaeve, and later arrives at Medo. Distressed by dreams of danger to Rand, she seeks out Anaiya to report her fears, which Anaiya interprets as a potential gift of Dreaming.
  • Nynaeve (Wisdom) — Nynaeve accompanies Egwene on the journey, riding with the Aes Sedai and later participating in channeling lessons. She becomes furious during a lesson with Verin, accidentally causing blankets to burst into flame before retreating into her tent in a sullen mood.
  • Amyrlin Seat (Mother) — The Amyrlin Seat departs Fal Dara immediately after an arrow strikes her sleeve, ignoring Lord Agelmar's protests. She commands her followers to travel quickly to Tar Valon, tolerating no delays or rest stops along the way.
  • Lord Agelmar / Agelmar (Lord of Fal Dara) — Lord Agelmar attempts to delay the Amyrlin's departure to find the bowman who attacked her, but she cuts him off with finality. He bids her farewell with a cup and watches her leave the keep.
  • Moiraine (Moiraine Sedai) — Moiraine rides with the Aes Sedai but remains distant from Egwene and Nynaeve. Later, at Medo, it is revealed that she has vanished two days prior with Lan, leaving the remaining sisters to proceed without her.
  • Verin / Verin Sedai (Verin Mathwin) — Verin Sedai visits Egwene and Nynaeve in their tent to teach them about channeling control. She warns them of the dangers of uncontrolled power and attempts to guide Nynaeve, resulting in Nynaeve accidentally setting blankets on fire. Verin departs after the incident, having warned them about drawing too much power.
  • Lan — Lan rides at the side of the procession and visits Egwene's tent to speak with Nynaeve in the dark, returning only once. It is later noted that he vanished with Moiraine two days before the group reached Medo.
  • Anaiya / Anaiya Sedai — Anaiya watches the loading of horses onto ships at Medo and chivies the workers. She speaks with Egwene, learning of her dream about Rand and suggesting that Egwene might be a Dreamer, a rare and valuable gift.
  • Bela (mare) — Bela, Egwene's shaggy mare, is among the Aes Sedai's horses. Egwene scrambles onto Bela to join the procession leaving Fal Dara.
