Chapter 46 - To Come Out of the Shadow

Summary

Nynaeve, Elayne, and Min successfully rescue Egwene from her captor Renna, leaving the terrified sul'dam Seta in the room to potentially remove her own collar. After escaping the damane quarters, the women are confronted by a Seanchan patrol; Egwene and Nynaeve use the One Power to destroy the soldiers and evade capture, while Nynaeve removes her own sul'dam bracelet. Simultaneously, Rand al’Thor and Ingtar Shinowa observe a Seanchan patrol approaching; Ingtar reveals his past betrayal to Rand and chooses to remain behind to face the enemy, allowing Rand and Hurin to proceed toward the Horn of Valere. At the docks, Bayle Domon and his crew wait anxiously as the chaos unfolds, while Geofram Bornhald and Byar watch the lightning from the hills and prepare to advance on Falme.

Characters

• Nynaeve — Nynaeve, disguised in a lightning-paneled dress and using the a'dam to control Seta, infiltrates the damane quarters with Elayne and Min. She rescues Egwene, removes her collar, and later uses the One Power to create a diversion with lightning and fireballs to help the group escape a Seanchan patrol.
• Elayne — Elayne accompanies Nynaeve and Min into the damane quarters, helps free Egwene, and wears a dyed dress to blend in. She expresses a desire to kill the Seanchan and helps the group escape the city by running from the pursuing soldiers.
• Min — Min scouts ahead in the damane quarters, guides the group to Egwene, and warns of approaching soldiers. She helps the group flee the area as fireballs rain down.
• Egwene (Tuli) — Egwene is freed from her collar by Nynaeve and attacks Renna to protect herself. She reveals the nature of sul'dam to the others and uses the One Power to blast Seanchan soldiers to help her friends escape, vowing never to return to her collar.
• Renna (sul'dam) — Renna enters the room where the women are hiding and is surprised to find Egwene uncollared. She is tackled by Egwene, collared herself, and left bound in the room by the rescuers.
• Seta (sul'dam, Leash Holder) — Seta is forced by Nynaeve to wear a dyed dress and impersonate a damane to infiltrate the quarters. She is terrified throughout the mission and is left cowering in the room with Renna after the women depart.
• Ingtar (Lord Ingtar, Lord of House Shinowa) — Ingtar hides in an alley with Rand and confronts the approaching Seanchan patrol alone. He reveals to Rand that he was a Darkfriend who intended to betray the Amyrlin Seat and chooses to stay behind to face the soldiers, allowing Rand to continue.
• Domon (Captain) — Bayle Domon stands on the deck of the Spray, restraining his crew from fleeing despite the chaos of fire and lightning over Falme. He insists on keeping his word to the women and waits for them to arrive.
• beast (beast, grolm) — A grolm runs alongside a man from a warehouse onto the docks during the chaos, leaping with long strides before disappearing into the streets.
