Chapter 46 - To Come Out of the Shadow
Summary
Nynaeve, Elayne, and Min rescue Egwene from the Seanchan damane quarters, where Egwene kills the sul’dam Renna after removing her collar. The group flees the house but is ambushed in the street by Seanchan soldiers and a fireball from a damane; Nynaeve uses lightning to cover their escape into an alley. At the docks, Bayle Domon restrains his crew from abandoning the ship as chaos erupts in the town. Geofram Bornhald leads his Children of the Light forces toward Falme, dismissing Byar’s reluctance. Meanwhile, Rand and Ingtar discuss the past, during which Ingtar confesses to being a Darkfriend and resolves to stay behind to hold off the advancing Seanchan patrol with his life, allowing Rand to escape with the Horn of Valere.
Characters
- Nynaeve — Nynaeve, disguised as a sul’dam, leads the rescue of Egwene, removes her own sul’dam bracelet with disgust, and uses lightning to shield the group from a falling fireball, allowing them to escape down an alley.
- Egwene (Tuli) — Egwene is freed from her collar by Nynaeve, attacks and subdues the sul’dam Renna by suffocation and collaring her, and uses the One Power to create explosions to cover the group's escape.
- Elayne — Elayne accompanies Nynaeve and Min to rescue Egwene, helps free Egwene from her collar, and witnesses the destruction of Renna and the subsequent escape attempt.
- Min — Min guides the group to Egwene's room, helps Egwene change into Nynaeve’s old dress, and warns the others of approaching Seanchan soldiers before the group is forced to dive for cover.
- Renna — Renna confronts the group in Egwene's room, is shocked to see Egwene free, is attacked by Egwene, and is left collapsed and terrified on the floor after being collared by her victim.
- Domon / Bayle Domon (Captain) — Bayle Domon waits on his ship at the docks, restrains his crewman Aedwin Cole from cutting the mooring lines, and urges the women to hurry while fearing the chaos in the town.
- Bornhald / Geofram Bornhald — Geofram Bornhald commands his thousand men of the Children of the Light to advance toward Falme, dismissing Byar's reluctance and observing the lightning and explosions in the town.
- Byar (Child Byar) — Byar receives orders to lead the advance toward Falme, bows reluctantly, and rides away with the legion despite his apparent hesitation.
- Rand — Rand hides in an alley with Ingtar, learns of Ingtar's past as a Darkfriend, and is urged by Ingtar to escape with the Horn; Rand blesses Ingtar and flees with Hurin.
- Ingtar / Lord Ingtar — Ingtar confesses to Rand that he was a Darkfriend who intended to sound the Horn for his own salvation, resolves to sacrifice himself to hold off the Seanchan patrol, and dies facing the enemy.
- Hurin — Hurin reports that a Seanchan patrol has turned aside, urges Rand and Ingtar to move, and escapes with Rand after Ingtar stays behind to fight.
- Aedwin Cole / Cole — Aedwin Cole attempts to swing an axe to cut the ship's mooring line to escape the chaos, but is restrained by Domon.
- Yarin — Yarin shouts that the damane are killing each other and urges Domon to sail away, but is overruled by the captain.
