Chapter 38 - Practice

Summary

Egwene, Nynaeve, Min, and Elayne gather in Egwene's room to practice channeling and discuss their anxieties about the One Power, the Aes Sedai, and their friends. Liandrin Sedai arrives and warns them that the Dark One and the Black Ajah pose a grave threat to Rand, Mat, and Perrin on Toman Head. She recruits Egwene and Nynaeve to travel there immediately to help the boys, explicitly forbidding them from telling anyone. Despite their status as novices and the Daughter-Heir, Min and Elayne insist on joining the dangerous mission, forcing the group to plan their unauthorized departure to Toman Head.

Characters

  • Egwene — Egwene practices channeling tiny balls of light with Nynaeve and Elayne in her room. She listens to Liandrin’s warning about the Black Ajah and Rand’s danger, and after Liandrin departs, Egwene agrees to the secret mission to Toman Head, vowing to help her friend.
  • Nynaeve (child) — Nynaeve paces anxiously in Egwene’s room before accidentally summoning a wind. She admits her fear of channeling to the others and, after Liandrin recruits them, agrees to go to Toman Head. As the group decides to go, Nynaeve turns to practicalities, discussing what they must take and how to get their horses.
  • Min — Min sits on a stool observing Egwene and Nynaeve, teasing Egwene about Galad and revealing her ability to see danger surrounding her friends. She insists on joining the mission to Toman Head, refusing to stay behind despite Nynaeve's protests.
  • Elayne (Daughter-Heir of Andor, Daughter-Heir) — Elayne enters the room bringing news of King Galldrian’s death and Logain’s distress. She joins the channeling practice, reveals her own fears of the Aes Sedai training, and firmly insists on accompanying the group to Toman Head.
  • Liandrin (Liandrin Sedai, Red Ajah) — Liandrin Sedai enters the novices' quarters and summons Egwene and Nynaeve to accompany her to Toman Head to help their friends. She warns them of the Black Ajah and the danger posed by Shayol Ghul, ordering them to meet one hour before sunset and keeping the mission secret.
