Chapter 22 - Watchers

Summary

In Tifan’s Well, Moiraine discusses the contingency of Lan’s bond passing to another with Lan himself, revealing her fear of her own mortality and her determination to keep him engaged in the greater war rather than seeking vengeance. After Lan departs in anger, Moiraine converses with Vandene, who provides historical context on the Horn of Valere, Toman Head, Shadar Logoth, and the Forsaken, specifically Lanfear. Moiraine then ventures into the garden where she is ambushed by a Black Ajah-warded Draghkar; Lan and another Warder, Jaem, intervene to kill the creature just as Moiraine attempts to channel, leading her to deduce the presence of the Black Ajah and resolve to leave immediately.

Characters

  • Moiraine (Moiraine Aes Sedai) — Moiraine questions Lan about their past and reveals to him that she has arranged for him to bond with another sister, exposing her fear of death and strategic planning. She later researches historical texts with Vandene, learns about Lanfear, and is saved from a Draghkar by Lan and Jaem, after which she deduces the Black Ajah's involvement and prepares to depart.
  • Lan (Warder, Lan Gaidin) — Lan confronts Moiraine about her plans to pass his bond, expressing anger at her lack of trust and his status as a 'parcel'. He later fights and kills a Draghkar alongside Jaem to save Moiraine's life, claiming her anger caused his delayed arrival.
  • Vandene (Aes Sedai, Sister) — Vandene serves tea to Moiraine and provides historical information regarding the Horn of Valere, Toman Head, Shadar Logoth, and Lanfear. She later helps treat Jaem after the Draghkar attack and observes the tension between Moiraine and Lan.
  • Adeleas (Aes Sedai, Sister) — Adeleas is present in the house, initially away while Jaem practices in the barn. She returns after the Draghkar attack, reacts with shock to the creature, and is tasked by Moiraine to distract the villagers while the body is hidden. She begins to protest that only a sister could ward the creature, but stops short of finishing her thought.
  • Jaem (Warder) — Jaem, the elderly Warder, practices with his sword before the attack. He fights alongside Lan to kill the Draghkar by embracing death, sustaining a shoulder wound, and then goes to distract the villagers as instructed by Adeleas.
