Mat emerges from a dice game, wearing his Two Rivers garb and secretly clutching his tainted dagger from Shadar Logoth. He tries to reassure Rand about the Aes Sedai but departs the room with Perrin after Rand's hostile rejection, though Rand remains inside determined to go alone.
Chapter 6 - Dark Prophecy

Mat lies unconscious and injured in the dungeon cell area alongside Egwene, having lost his tainted dagger during the chaos. Moiraine identifies his condition as more serious than Egwene's and orders him to be taken to the Amyrlin Seat.
Chapter 7 - Blood Calls Blood

Mat lies unconscious in the infirmary, recovering from the effects of the Shadar Logoth dagger. He briefly wakes to acknowledge Perrin before falling back into a deep sleep.
Chapter 10 - The Hunt Begins

Mat remains at the rear of the column with Perrin, eventually crossing the river to search the empty village. He finds no one inside the houses and later joins the group at the site of the dead Myrddraal.
Chapter 11 - Glimmers of the Pattern

Mat bursts into the clearing to see the banner, expresses horror at Rand's potential identity as the Dragon and the danger posed by his ability to channel, and eventually decides to sleep away from Rand due to fear.
Chapter 14 - Wolfbrother
Mat — aliases: only sane one left
Mat remains suspicious of Perrin’s sudden claim of sniffer skills, mocking him as crazy while worrying about the missing Rand. He rides with the party, voicing disparaging remarks until Verin arrives, then notes that Verin is likely searching for Rand rather than the Horn.
Chapter 28 - A New Thread in the Pattern

Mat rides with the group, juggling balls and looking pale. He comments that Urien looks like Rand and wonders aloud if Rand is an Aiel, while also muttering coarsely when he sees the Aes Sedai symbol drawn on the ground.
Chapter 30 - Daes Dae’mar

Mat arrives at the burning inn with his bow strung across his back, looking pale but grinning weakly as he rejoins Rand in the street.
Chapter 31 - On the Scent
Mat
Mat arrives at the fire scene and later juggles boiled eggs while eating at the inn. He questions Rand about their disappearance and the loss of the dagger, and watches Verin with suspicion as she discusses the Horn and the sa'angreal.
Chapter 32 - Dangerous Words

Mat pretends to be Rand's servant to infiltrate the kitchens and locate the Shadar Logoth dagger. Later, he is claimed to have fallen and twisted his knee to provide Rand with an excuse to leave the gathering early.
Chapter 33 - A Message from the Dark

Mat acts as a servant to infiltrate the kitchens and locate the dagger's scent, though he fails to find it. He learns of the Waygate and later resolves to go to Toman Head, unaware that Verin has informed Rand that his body is wasting away due to the Shadar Logoth dagger's taint.
Chapter 35 - Stedding Tsofu
Mat
Mat arrives looking gaunt and is healed by Verin twice. He teases Loial about Erith, expresses fear of the Aiel spears, and later discusses the possibility that the Aiel are hunting Rand with Rand and Perrin before reacting to Loial's marriage fears.
Chapter 36 - Among the Elders
Mat
Mat questions the Elders' treatment of Loial and teases him relentlessly about the flower he received from Erith. He sits on the coping with his head in his hands when the Waygate is rejected, but lifts his head with hope when Hurin suggests using a Portal Stone to save him from wasting away.
Chapter 37 - What Might Be
Mat
Mat looks eager to use the Stone, makes a weak joke, and is later huddled in a ball with his arms around his head during the power surge. He grabs Rand's coat to swear he will never betray him, and eventually stands up to ride west, looking ill but moving spryly.
Chapter 41 - Disagreements
Mat
Mat shivers and complains about the weather, mocking the idea of Seanchan monsters while secretly fearing them. He sides with Hurin for the search, noting that Hurin has the best chance of finding the Shadar Logoth dagger needed to cure him.
