La Carconte / Madeleine — aliases: Madame, the wife
Sickly and frail, La Carconte listens to the conversation from the staircase. She urges her husband to refuse the Abbé's offer out of fear of retaliation from powerful friends but eventually succumbs to greed when she sees the diamond. She questions if the diamond belongs to them alone and withdraws to the stairs, allowing Caderousse to decide the course of action, after which Caderousse closes the door to ensure the secrecy of the confession.
Chapter 27 - Caderousse’s Story
La Carconte
La Carconte, Caderousse’s sickly wife, listens in from the staircase during the conversation. After the abbé leaves, she expresses suspicion that the diamond might be fake, suggesting it is a trick to extract secrets, which momentarily destabilizes Caderousse before he rushes to the fair.
