Loial appears in the library, towering over Rand with his massive stature and tufted ears. He engages Rand in a long conversation about Ogier history, the Pattern, and the destruction of ancient groves, eventually identifying Rand as a ta'veren and asking to join his company.

Loial plays a game of stones with Master Gill and identifies Rand as ta'veren. He declines to enter the common room during the Whitecloak encounter and later agrees to travel with Rand to Tar Valon.
Chapter 42 - Remembrance of Dreams

Loial is sprawled on a couch reading with a cat on his stomach. He answers questions about the stedding and shares a story about a man who fled Stedding Shangtai with a warning about the Eye of the World. He confirms he knows the Songs of Growing and the Ways, but vehemently refuses to lead the group into the Ways, stating they will die or be swallowed by the Shadow.

Loial reads the script on the Guiding and identifies the Trolloc runes. He panics at the approach of Machin Shin, crying out in despair, and guides the group to the correct bridge to escape the Black Wind.
Chapter 46 - Fal Dara

Loial rides with the group, saddened by the destruction of the Ogier grove. He engages in formal greetings with the guards of Fal Dara and speaks with Lord Agelmar about the absence of the grove. He remains present in the study during the confrontation with Fain.

Loial travels with the group, moaning about the dangers ahead and the Worms. He explains that Worms can kill Fades. Upon reaching the sanctuary, he scrambles down from his horse to formally bow to the Green Man, greeting him as Treebrother.
Chapter 50 - Meetings at the Eye

Loial enters the cavern with the group and expresses unease at the sight of the Eye of the World. He is silenced by Aginor's glare and flees into the trees with the others when Aginor advances through Moiraine's fire.
Chapter 52 - There Is Neither Beginning Nor End
Loial — aliases: Ogier (Ожье)
Loial carries the heavy golden chest containing the Horn of Valere and helps unfold the Dragon banner. Moiraine asks him if he can read the Old Tongue, and he reads the inscription in the Old Tongue, marveling at the treasures. He expresses delight at the interest in books and the dangers they have faced.
Chapter 53 - The Wheel Turns

Loial refuses to mount immediately, kneeling before the oak that replaced the Green Man to sing a Tree Song that restores life to a small circle of flowers and grass. He later carries the golden chest containing the Horn of Valere into Lord Agelmar's study and complies with Moiraine's orders.
