A young woman in divided skirts and a dark cloak jumps onto the Snow Goose, claiming she wants to go to Illian. She identifies herself as a Hunter of the Horn who took her oath at age six, asserts she is following the group to find the Horn in the Mountains of Mist, and proposes the name Faile for her travels, rejecting the name Mandarb.

A black stallion tethered in a rope pen between the masts of the Snow Goose, noted by Perrin and Zarine during their conversation.

Zarine sits on the deck sharpening a knife and watches Perrin. She is identified as a passenger with the group, and Moiraine interprets her name as meaning she is destined to be a great beauty and heartbreaker.

Mandarb, Lan's horse, is being looked over by Lan on the deck of the Snow Goose.

Chapter 41 - A Hunter’s Oath

Zarine insists on being called Faile and confronts Moiraine's attempts to dismiss her, ultimately swearing a Hunter's oath of obedience to remain with the group. She is hoisted onto Stepper behind Perrin, clinging to his waist as they ride into Illian, and threatens Perrin if he tries to make her his responsibility.

Mandarb is unloaded from the Snow Goose and saddled by Lan on the dock before he rides into Illian.

Chapter 42 - Easing the Badger

Zarine

Zarine rides behind Perrin into Illian. She eats fish at dinner, complaining about it, and watches the Gray Men attack, eventually retrieving a knife from a corpse. She questions Moiraine about the danger but is silenced by her.

Chapter 43 - Shadowbrothers

Zarine / Faile — aliases: Hunter of the Horn

Zarine, adopting the name Faile, waits for Perrin in his bedchamber, confronting him about his identity and ta'veren nature before Moiraine interrupts them.

Chapter 44 - Hunted

Zarine — aliases: Girl

Zarine refuses to swear to go another way and follows the group out into the storm. She mounts the bay gelding provided by Lan and holds the horses during the Darkhound attack, asking what the stone face is.

Lan's black warhorse follows Moiraine's white mare into the rain, is brought to the mound, and whickers in fear when the Darkhounds appear before being held by Lan.

Chapter 50 - The Hammer

Zarine — aliases: Faile, mistress

Zarine, who has chosen the name Faile, questions the group about their purpose in Tear and is reprimanded by Lan. She sits in the smithy watching Perrin work and later attends the briefing where she expresses fear of the Forsaken but swears to stand with the group. She asks Perrin what he intends to do during the confrontation.

Zarine rushes into the private dining room and collapses, lying motionless on the floor with her soul trapped in a dream. As she lies there, she appears small and helpless to Perrin standing before her, who then seeks to enter the dream to find her.

Chapter 55 - What Is Written in Prophecy

Faile — aliases: falcon, my falcon

Faile appears in Perrin's dream chained to a falcon perch. After Perrin breaks her chains, she appears in the dining room of the Star inn, tending to his wounds.
