Chapter 31 - The Woman of Tanchico

Thom Merrilin recites a story while drunk, lamenting his past failures and his need to hide from Elaida. He appears to be in a stupor until he briefly leaves the table, after which he returns fully sober and ready to travel, agreeing to accompany Mat to Caemlyn.

Chapter 32 - The First Ship

Thom Merrilin boards the Gray Gull with Mat, observing the captain's arrangement of the cabin and later aiding Mat in repelling the nighttime assassin attack. He notes the strange luck and the paper, stating his lack of knowledge regarding High Lord Samon, eventually settling in to sleep beside him.

Chapter 40 - A Hero in the Night

Thom / Thom Merrilin — aliases: gleeman

Thom accompanies Mat to Aringill, comments on the suffering of the refugees, and attempts to negotiate for lodging with innkeepers. He observes Aludra’s arrival, identifies her as an Illuminator, and advises Mat to flee the stable quickly after their encounter with her pursers.

Chapter 44 - Hunted

Thom — aliases: gleeman, Thom Merrilin

Thom tunes his harp and warns Mat about the dangers of the fireworks he is examining. He kills one of the assassins with a knife when they attack Mat's camp. He kicks back the cloak of the dead woman leader to retrieve his knife and advises Mat to saddle their horses so they can move on.

Chapter 45 - Caemlyn

Thom / Thom Merrilin — aliases: the gleeman

Thom rides with Mat into Caemlyn, advises him to find food first, and later waits in the inn's library with Basel Gill playing a stones board game. He reacts with suspicion to Mat's fireworks and frustration at Mat's refusal to use the letter for safe passage, eventually urging Mat to consider the danger of his plan.
