Mat lies unconscious in a horse litter, breathing with a dry rasp, while a mysterious leather sack is taken from his feet by Verin. He is hurriedly carried away by guards to a secluded location due to his dangerous illness, left behind as the others are confined.
Chapter 18 - Healing
Mat
Mat lies unconscious and gaunt on a stone table, his hand clenched around the Shadar Logoth dagger. During the Healing, he arches his back and shouts commands in the Old Tongue as Manetheren soldiers, commanding the Aes Sedai to release him. When the dagger is sealed in a box, he collapses, and Siuan declares he is as well as can be expected, requiring only rest and food.
Chapter 19 - Awakening
Mat
Mat awakens to find himself in a lavish room, recalling fragmented memories of battles from his past life and his recent illness. He eats a large meal, worries about the implications of being Healed by the Aes Sedai, and resolves to find Egwene and Nynaeve before leaving Tar Valon, but is interrupted by a knock on the door.
Chapter 20 - Visitations

Mat recovers in his room, enduring an unwanted visit from the enigmatic Selene who offers him an alliance against the Aes Sedai. He later faces Siuan Sanche and Leane Dare, who compel him to accept his link to the Horn of Valere and restrict his departure from Tar Valon to protect the artifact from the Shadow.
Chapter 24 - Scouting and Discoveries

Mat wakes, eats heavily, and sneaks out to scout the Tower, learning from guards that his description is widely known and he is confined. He encounters Else Grinwell, who dismisses him, then finds the Warder training yard where he challenges and defeats Gawyn and Galad in a quarterstaff duel, speaking the Old Tongue and exhibiting Manetheren skills. After the fight, Gawyn and Hammar speak to him, giving him his winnings and asking his origins, before Mat collapses from exhaustion and hunger.
Chapter 28 - A Way Out

Mat Cauthon finishes a breakfast snack and is visited by Egwene, Nynaeve, and Elayne. He deflects their initial attempts to persuade him to carry a letter to Caemlyn by citing the Amyrlin's confinement orders until Nynaeve channels him to prove his health. Eventually, he agrees to the escape plan after Nynaeve reveals an order bearing Siuan Sanche's seal, dancing in victory once the women leave.
Chapter 30 - The First Toss
Mat
Mat packs his quarters with food, dons his cloak and quarterstaff, and slips out of the White Tower past an amused Anaiya. He gambles wildly in Tar Valon’s inns, winning every toss with miraculous luck, before fleeing through the streets and rooftops to escape pursuers, eventually killing a man who attacks him on a narrow bridge by flipping them both over the railing.
Chapter 31 - The Woman of Tanchico
Mat — aliases: boy, young master
Mat Cauthon locates Thom Merrilin in a Tar Valon inn, orders food and wine, and questions him about Rand al'Thor and Moiraine's whereabouts. After Thom briefly disappears and returns sober, Mat gives a silver mark to the serving girl Saal, and the two prepare to leave Tar Valon on the first available ship to Caemlyn.
Chapter 32 - The First Ship
Mat — aliases: young lord, farmboy
Mat Cauthon uses a forged Amyrlin order and gold to trick the captain and crew of the Gray Gull into allowing passage and stealing the captain's cabin. He engages in conversation with Captain Mallia, subtly reinforcing the captain's bias against the White Tower, and later kills three assassins who board the ship at night to stop him.
Chapter 40 - A Hero in the Night
Mat — aliases: young hero
Mat watches the refugee crisis in Aringill, donates coins to a starving family, and struggles to find lodging until winning a dice wager with Jeral Florry for access to the stable. He leaps from the hayloft to fight off four attackers pursuing Aludra, accepts fireworks as payment for his help, and offers her his own gold before departing into the rain.
Chapter 44 - Hunted
Mat
Mat rests by a campfire with Thom and examines a firework from Aludra, opening it to find pebbles. He and Thom are ambushed by assassins; Mat throws the firework to create a distraction and fights with his quarterstaff. After Thom kills the attackers, Mat recognizes the dead crossbowman as a figure from his memories and resolves to deliver the letter to Caemlyn quickly.
