Lies unconscious in a horse litter throughout the arrival in Tar Valon, his breathing a dry rasp. He is swiftly carried away by two laborers summoned by Sheriam after Verin declares him dangerously ill.
Chapter 18 - Healing
Mat
Mat lies on the stone table as the Aes Sedai heal him, struggling against the dagger's bond. He shouts battle commands in the Old Tongue of Manetheren and orders the Aes Sedai to release him before the dagger is trapped and he collapses.
Chapter 19 - Awakening

Mat wakes in a lavish room with a plaster ceiling, his mind clouded by dreams of Manetheren and memories of Shadar Logoth. He examines his emaciated reflection, eats a massive meal of beef, vegetables, and cheese, and reasons his way through his situation, concluding he is in the White Tower and must find Egwene and Nynaeve. After finishing all the food, he remembers blowing the Horn of Valere and braces for the person knocking at his door.
Chapter 20 - Visitations

Mat wakes to find himself naked and is visited by the beautiful Selene, who warns him about the Aes Sedai's intentions and the presence of the Black Ajah. After Selene leaves, Siuan Sanche and Leane Bashere arrive; Siuan reveals Mat's unique link to the Horn of Valere and forbids him from speaking of it, ensuring he stays in Tar Valon to recover under their control.
Chapter 24 - Scouting and Discoveries

Mat wakes, eats, and exits his room to scout escape routes. He tricks guardsmen about leaving the city and alienates a former acquaintance, Else Grinwell, before finding a practice yard. There, he challenges Galad and Gawyn to a quarterstaff fight, wins decisively using Old Tongue reflexes and immense luck, and then flees the scene while suffering from extreme hunger and exhaustion.
Chapter 28 - A Way Out

Mat finishes a snack and interacts with his visitors, initially resisting their attempts to send him on an errand by citing the Amyrlin's restrictions. After Nynaeve channels to verify his health, he accepts the letter of authority to deliver Elayne's letter to Queen Morgase, celebrating his escape from Tar Valon.
Chapter 30 - The First Toss
Mat
Escapes his room with stored food and his quarterstaff, gambles extensively in Southharbor taverns with impossible luck, and realizes his connection to the Shadar Logoth dagger is the source. He fights off a verbal threat regarding the Dark One, evades footpads by climbing across roofs, and accidentally kills an attacker by flipping them both over a bridge railing, surviving the fall while the attacker dies by his own weapon. He then seeks refuge at an inn.
