Chapter 1 - The Flame of Tar Valon

Rand practices sword forms with Lan on a tower top, during which a solidified wind inflicts real gashes on his chest. He worries about his heron-marked sword, his impending departure, and his feelings for Egwene, but is shaken by the arrival of the Amyrlin Seat's procession and flees the tower.
Chapter 2 - The Welcome

Rand rushes through the keep trying to avoid the Amyrlin's arrival, only to find his room ransacked by servants replacing his clothes. He narrowly avoids detection by Elansu, hides his old gleeman cloak and flute, and attempts to sneak out to his horse, but discovers all gates and stables are sealed by order of Lord Agelmar upon realizing the Amyrlin is coming for him.
Chapter 3 - Friends and Enemies

Rand attempts to leave the keep but finds all gates barred and guarded, becoming increasingly paranoid about being watched by unseen forces. He confronts his friends Mat, Perrin, and Loial, angrily driving them away to protect them from his perceived danger. After Egwene insists he hide to avoid the Amyrlin Seat, Rand visits the dungeon, encounters a prophetic Padan Fain, and finally agrees to disguise himself as Egwene's servant to hide in the women's apartments.
Chapter 6 - Dark Prophecy

Rand wakes from a nightmare, hides in the women's apartments, and rushes to the dungeon upon hearing alarms, where he discovers murdered guards, an escaped Fain, and unconscious friends. He is confronted by Liandrin, saved by Moiraine, and later informed by Lan that he is permitted to leave the keep immediately.
Chapter 7 - Blood Calls Blood

Rand walks stiffly through the keep and enters the Amyrlin's chambers, where he is formally identified as the Dragon Reborn by Siuan. He struggles with the revelation, invoking the void to maintain his composure, and ultimately agrees to ride with Ingtar to find the Horn of Valere. Later, he confronts the restrictions of the women's apartments, speaks briefly with Egwene about their impending separation, and departs for his journey.
Chapter 9 - Leavetakings

Rand mounts his stallion Red and joins Ingtar's company, apologizing to Mat and Perrin who ride away without listening. He meets Hurin the sniffer, who confirms the thieves went south, and rides out of Fal Dara with the Gray Owl banner, hoping to avoid his fate.
Chapter 10 - The Hunt Begins

He experiences a terrifying, freezing vision inside a house in the abandoned village, which ends with him unconsciously channeling the One Power to kill a swarm of flies.

Rand receives the bundle and learns of his role as second-in-command, later discovering the Dragon's banner which he packs into his saddlebags. He confronts Mat and Perrin about channeling, causing them to leave him, then joins Loial and Hurin at camp before lying awake with anxiety.
Chapter 13 - From Stone to Stone

Rand wakes to find himself in a strange, pale world with Loial and Hurin. He attempts to channel through the Stone cylinder to return home but fails due to the taint of saidin, suffering a psychic backlash. He accepts the responsibility to lead the group and follows Hurin's scent trail south to find the Darkfriends.
Chapter 15 - Kinslayer

Rand leads Loial and Hurin through the eerie, faded landscape, suppressing his fear to maintain the group's morale. During his watch, he engages in a mental and illusory confrontation with Ba'alzamon, who tempts him with power and reveals their shared past, ending with Rand rejecting the offer and finding a heron branded on his palm despite no physical wounds.
Chapter 16 - In the Mirror of Darkness

Rand leads his companions through the strange world, rides up to Hawkwing's spire, and shoots a grolm to save Selene, later refusing her request to take her to a Portal Stone so he can continue hunting the Darkfriends.
Chapter 17 - Choices

Rand leads his party to a defensive position and kills five grolm with his bow while entering the void. He then channels the One Power through a Portal Stone, suffering intense pain and addiction to the saidin light, to transport the group back to their true world.
Chapter 19 - Beneath the Dagger
Rand / al'Thor / Lord Rand
Rand struggles with his attraction to Selene and his destiny as the Dragon, eventually deciding to steal the Horn of Valere from Fain’s camp. He sneaks into the camp with Loial, retrieves the Horn and the Shadar Logoth dagger, and fights off pursuing Trollocs before returning to his companions and agreeing to travel to Cairhien.
Chapter 20 - Saidin
Rand / Lord Rand
Rand travels with Selene and Loial, refusing to let them see the Horn of Valere or the Shadar Logoth dagger. At the Eye of the World, he is mesmerized by the crystal sphere and the song of saidin, entering a deep trance where he nearly channels uncontrollably before breaking the void and shouting a fragment of the Prophecies of the Dragon. He and his companions then ride to the village of Tremonsien and stop at the Nine Rings inn.
Chapter 21 - The Nine Rings

Rand arrives at the Nine Rings inn with Selene, Loial, and Hurin, where he interacts with Captain Caldevwin and plays the flute for the soldiers. He learns of Caldevwin's excavation project and is subsequently provided with an escort by Caldevwin, commanded by Tavolin, to travel to Cairhien after Selene's mysterious departure.
Chapter 25 - Cairhien

Rand rides into Cairhien, studies the city's layout and social divisions, and checks into an inn where he burns noble invitations to declare he has no part in the Great Game. He retreats to the Foregate and discovers Thom Merrilin performing there, promising to return with his harp and flute.
Chapter 26 - Discord

Rand rushes to meet Thom Merrilin, bringing him his harp and flute. He reveals the Horn of Valere to Thom, who initially laughs it off before taking it seriously. Rand questions Thom about the Karaethon Cycle and learns of Thom's nephew Owyn's fate. He eventually leaves Thom after Thom refuses to join his quest, warning him to keep a clean break.
Chapter 27 - The Shadow in the Night

Rand flees disguised Trollocs through the streets of Cairhien, using the One Power with difficulty before relying on a firework explosion to eliminate the pursuers. He rescues Selene and Loial from the trap, leads them to escape the Illuminators' courtyard, and later reads a note from Selene while worrying about his friends and the Horn.
Chapter 30 - Daes Dae’mar

Rand burns invitations from the King and Lord Barthanes to maintain neutrality in the Great Game, then struggles with frustration over Ingtar’s absence. He rescues an unconscious Hurin from the burning inn, retrieves his saddlebags containing the heron-mark sword banner, and collapses in the street upon seeing his friends and Ingtar arrive.
Chapter 31 - On the Scent

Rand is reunited with his friends and helps Hurin up from the fire. He burns Selene's letters in his hearth before joining the group at The Great Tree, where he accepts an invitation to Lord Barthanes's manor and asserts his identity as a shepherd to Verin, stating that their priority is to retrieve the Horn and the dagger.
Chapter 32 - Dangerous Words

Rand enters Barthanes's manor, presenting himself as a lord to gain entry. He walks arrogantly to follow Verin's advice, engaging in tense, cryptic dialogue with Barthanes about his origins and the King of Andor. He evades the romantic advances of three noblewomen, spots Thom Merrilin, and, upon being summoned by Hurin with a pretext of a falling servant, follows Hurin away from the gathering.
Chapter 33 - A Message from the Dark

Rand investigates the walled garden with Hurin and Loial, climbs the wall, and opens the Waygate, only to be confronted by Machin Shin. He channels the One Power to close the gate, enduring the physical and mental strain of saidin. He then receives a threatening message from Fain via Barthanes and declares his intention to ride to Toman Head to follow him.
Chapter 35 - Stedding Tsofu

Rand rides into Stedding Tsofu, feeling a chill of refreshment and a sense of loss, and is introduced to Erith. He draws his heron-mark sword during the Aiel confrontation before sheathing it after Juni's intervention, and later discusses the implications of the Aiel's presence with Mat and Perrin.
Chapter 36 - Among the Elders

Rand accompanies the group into the Elders' chamber, feeling the weight of their authority and the absence of the stedding's peace outside. He advocates for Loial to join them, citing his friend's importance and ability to decipher Guidings. When the Waygate is opened and closed by Machin Shin, Rand identifies the Black Wind. He later agrees to find a Portal Stone in Kinslayer's Dagger to save Mat, driven by both desperation and an eager pull toward channeling saidin.
Chapter 37 - What Might Be

Rand rides Red to the Portal Stone and, under Verin's instruction, channels saidin to activate it, which plunges him into a stream of visions of alternate lives and deaths. He collapses after the surge, reveals he lived and died many times in the visions, and refuses Verin's help to stand, later riding west with his friends to find Fain.
Chapter 41 - Disagreements

Rand practices sword forms in a void to maintain balance, discusses the Whitecloak presence with Ingtar, and accepts his role as one of the five riders to find the Horn and the Shadar Logoth dagger.
Chapter 45 - Blademaster

Rand enters Falme with his companions, infiltrates High Lord Turak's house, and witnesses Egwene wearing a damane collar. He engages Turak in a sword duel, killing the High Lord with the River Undercuts the Bank form while maintaining the void to avoid channeling. Rand lies sprawled unconscious under an oak, breathing raggedly and radiating icy coldness, with a melted hilt gripped in his hand and a burn wound on his side. He stirs and murmurs only when Lanfear appears above him, claiming him as hers before disappearing.
Chapter 49 - What Was Meant to Be
Rand / Dragon — aliases: Dragon Reborn, Lord Dragon
Rand awakens from a days-long sleep to find his wound bound and his sword ruined, learning that his friends have left for Tar Valon. He rejects Moiraine's presence and his identity as the Dragon until Uno and Masema pledge their oaths to him, forcing him to accept his duty despite his resistance.
