Loial is found in a storeroom watching men dice, initially discussing the Amyrlin Seat and his inability to play games. He explains that he knows no secret exits from Fal Dara and later asserts the nature of ta'veren before stalk away after Rand drives him off.

Chapter 9 - Leavetakings

Loial — aliases: Builder, Kiseran

Loial arrives on his large horse to join Rand’s party, stating he cannot miss the chance to see history weave itself around ta’veren. He converses with Rand about Ogier life before riding out with the group.

Chapter 10 - The Hunt Begins

Loial

Loial rides alongside Rand, discussing the Aiel and the history of the fallen nation of Hardan. He explains Shienaran burial customs and witnesses the discovery of the dead Myrddraal.

Chapter 11 - Glimmers of the Pattern

Loial sits on a stone examining markings on it, joins Hurin near the campfire, and offers companionship to Rand before they make their beds together.

Chapter 13 - From Stone to Stone

Loial wakes alongside Rand and identifies the central cylinder as a Stone from an Age prior to the Age of Legends. He advises Rand that the Stones may not function via the One Power and expresses doubt about their ability to use them for travel. He accompanies Rand and Hurin southward after Rand makes the decision to hunt the Darkfriends.

Chapter 15 - Kinslayer

Loial rides alongside the group with unease until he stops to sing to a giantsbroom tree, using his fading Talent to create a quarterstaff for protection. He remains skeptical of the land's safety and carries the staff as they continue their search.

Chapter 16 - In the Mirror of Darkness

Loial accompanies Rand and Hurin, identifies the spire's corruption, and begins discussing history and the Ways with Selene, who notes that some Elders lack her historical knowledge.

Chapter 17 - Choices

Loial — aliases: Ogier

Loial assists Rand in the defense against the grolm and climbs steep terrain to reach the Portal Stone. After the journey to the true world, he observes the landscape and offers his limited knowledge regarding the nature of the mirror worlds.

Chapter 19 - Beneath the Dagger

Loial wakes and joins Rand on the night watch, identifying himself as an alantin. He accompanies Rand to Fain’s camp, lifts the heavy chest containing the Horn, and runs back to their campsite while Rand fights the pursuing Trollocs, expressing surprise at Rand’s mental state.

Chapter 20 - Saidin

Loial travels alongside his horse, carrying the Horn of Valere in a chest covered by his blanket to disguise it as clothes. He observes Rand's strange behavior during the incident with the giant hand and crystal sphere and later rides into Tremonsien, noting the village's layout and the locals' reaction to his size.

Loial accompanies Rand into Cairhien, carrying the Horn of Valere disguised under his blanket. He comments on the state of Cairhien's towers and refuses Rand's offer to explore the Foregate, choosing instead to stay at the inn to read and avoid Ogier from his stedd.

Chapter 26 - Discord

Loial accompanies Rand to meet Thom, carrying the Horn disguised under his blanket. He meets Thom formally and attempts to sit on the bed when invited by Dena. Later, he excuses himself to let Rand speak with Thom privately, citing an interest in a dice game.

Chapter 27 - The Shadow in the Night

Loial accompanies Rand through the Foregate, killing a Trolloc in self-defense and helping guide Rand and Selene to safety. He helps ignite a firework to create a diversion, escapes the resulting explosion, and returns to the inn with Rand, explaining that Selene slipped away during the escape.

Loial attends the gathering to fulfill his role as a sought-after Ogier noble. He informs Rand that a Waygate is nearby, explaining the history of the site as a former Ogier grove, and urges Rand to disperse among the crowd to avoid suspicion.

Chapter 33 - A Message from the Dark

Loial accompanies Rand to the garden, identifies the structure as a Waygate within an old Ogier grove, and helps lift Rand over the wall. He scrambles to replace the Avendesora leaf to help close the gate and later confirms the plan to travel through other Waygates at Stedding Tsofu.

Chapter 35 - Stedding Tsofu

Loial explains the nature of steddings and the Longing to his friends, and is introduced to Erith. He becomes visibly nervous in the guest quarters, fearing the Elders will arrange a marriage for him, and compares Ogier mating rituals to human ones with Rand and Mat.
