Chapter 52 - There Is Neither Beginning Nor End
Summary
Rand al'Thor awakens on a hilltop overlooking the Eye of the World, discovering he has survived the confrontation with the Forsaken Aginor by wielding the male half of the One Power, a feat that leaves him feared and distrusted by his companions, particularly Egwene and Moiraine. After recovering his strength, Rand reunites with his friends who have retrieved artifacts from the Eye: a seal of the Dark One's prison, the Horn of Valere, and the Dragon banner. Moiraine confirms the artifacts' significance and their necessity for the coming war, while Rand struggles with the isolation caused by his newfound ability to channel, vowing not to be used as a tool by the Aes Sedai despite their warnings about the escalating threat in the Blight.
Characters
- Rand / Rand al'Thor — Rand awakens amidst the ashes of Aginor, realizing he channeled saidin to defeat the Dark One and his general. He finds his friends, explains his survival with a lie, and listens as they unveil the treasures of the Eye, including the Horn of Valere and the Dragon banner, while grappling with their fearful reaction to his use of the One Power.
- Egwene — Egwene waits beneath the oak tree with Moiraine and Nynaeve, initially drawing back from Rand's touch out of fear before embracing him. She expresses her sorrow and loyalty to him, then helps Moiraine and listens as the treasures are revealed, remaining silent about her own feelings regarding his channeling.
- Nynaeve (Wisdom) — Nynaeve sits with the women, her eyes old and regretful as she warns Rand that he is too dangerous. She helps lift the weakened Moiraine and shares in the revelation of what the Eye contained, showing concern for the future of the group and Rand's path.
- Moiraine / Moiraine Sedai (Aes Sedai) — Moiraine recovers from her injuries, revealing the nature of the artifacts found in the Eye, including the Horn of Valere and the Dragon banner. She commands Rand to tell his story, refuses his request to teach him, and insists on taking the artifacts to Illian, maintaining authority over the group despite the crisis.
- Mat — Mat arrives with the group, complaining that Moiraine stopped them from looking for Rand. He retrieves fragments of the Dark One's prison seal and examines the treasures, reacting with awe to the Horn of Valere and shock at the realization of the artifacts' power and the Dark One's weakness.
- Perrin — Perrin brings a large bundle of white cloth containing the Dragon banner. He expresses a strong desire to return home and questions the destination of Illian, displaying his yellow eyes and a stoic demeanor.
- Lan (Warder) — Lan leads his friends into the clearing, supporting Moiraine. He strikes a cuendillar fragment with a knife to prove its indestructibility, and listens to Moiraine's identification of the treasures. He greets Rand with dry approval of his survival and sword.
- Loial (Ogier) — Loial carries the heavy golden chest containing the Horn of Valere and helps unfold the Dragon banner. Moiraine asks him if he can read the Old Tongue, and he reads the inscription in the Old Tongue, marveling at the treasures. He expresses delight at the interest in books and the dangers they have faced.
- Bela — Bela, Egwene's shaggy brown mare, is mentioned as having been cleansed of tiredness by Rand's subconscious use of the One Power during the flight from Baerlon, a detail Moiraine cites as evidence of Rand's secret channeling.
