Chapter 37 - The Long Chase

Summary

Moiraine Sedai, Lan Mandragoran, and Nynaeve al'Meara follow a trail toward Caemlyn, but Moiraine loses the specific scent of the boy they seek after he regains his token; however, she soon realizes he has it again and they continue. The trio discovers a large encampment of Whitecloaks and plans a rescue for the boy held within. Nynaeve stealthily cuts the horses' picket ropes, including those of the mare Bela, before Moiraine summons a violent lightning storm to create chaos. As the horses panic and flee, Nynaeve mounts Bela and escapes the camp with the Warder and Aes Sedai, leaving the Whitecloaks distracted by the storm and their own loose animals.

Characters

• Nynaeve (Wisdom) — Nynaeve waits impatiently for Moiraine and Lan, then follows them to a Whitecloak camp. She stealthily approaches the horse lines, cutting the picket ropes while hiding from guards, and mounts the mare Bela just as Moiraine creates a diversion with lightning, allowing her to escape the chaos.
• Moiraine (Aes Sedai) — Moiraine leads the group, losing and then regaining the scent of the boy they seek. She conceals herself in the shadows of the Whitecloak camp and eventually summons a massive lightning storm to distract the guards and scatter the horses, facilitating Nynaeve's escape.
• Lan (Warder) — Lan guides the group to the Whitecloak camp and explains the situation to Nynaeve. He ensures the horses are secure, then disappears into the darkness.
• Bela — Bela, the shaggy brown mare, is among the horses at the Whitecloak camp. She is woken by Nynaeve cutting her rope, rears in panic during the lightning storm, and is mounted by Nynaeve as they escape the camp.
