Chapter 21 - Listen to the Wind

Summary

Nynaeve al'Meara awakens near the River Arinelle and searches for the others, eventually finding Moiraine Sedai and Lan al'Tear camped by the riverbank. Lan reports that the Trolloc force has dispersed, and Moiraine deduces that Nynaeve can channel the One Power, revealing that Nynaeve has experienced the physical reactions of a woman capable of using the True Source and has previously healed Egwene al'Vere. Despite her reluctance and anger at Moiraine's manipulation, Nynaeve is forced to admit her ability when Moiraine accurately recounts her past healing of Egwene. Moiraine explains that she uses tokens to track the boys' lives and that one boy is alive and across the river, while Egwene's whereabouts remain unknown. Nynaeve insists on joining the group to find Egwene, and Moiraine allows her to travel south with them, though she prioritizes finding the two boys who lost their tokens.

  • Nynaeve / Wisdom / Nynaeve al'Meara (the Wisdom, Mistress al'Meara) — Nynaeve awakens in a hollow near the river and stalks the bank to find the others, eventually spying on Moiraine and Lan. She is confronted by Moiraine, who deduces her ability to channel by recalling her past healing of Egwene. Though furious and resistant, Nynaeve admits to her power and agrees to join the group south, vowing to find Egwene.
  • Moiraine / Aes Sedai (the Aes Sedai) — Moiraine camps by the river with Lan, brewing tea and discussing the Trolloc pursuit. She reveals to Nynaeve that she can channel and has tracked the boys via tokens, confirming Rand is alive. She dismisses Nynaeve's demands to find Egwene immediately but allows her to join the party.
  • Lan / Warder (the Warder) — Lan scouts the area and reports the disappearance of the Trolloc host. He stands guard by Moiraine's fire, blocking Nynaeve's approach with his body, and later prepares their horses for departure, fetching Nynaeve's mount from the woods.
  • Mandarb — Lan's black stallion is present at the campsite. Lan mounts Mandarb after saddling it and leads the group south, followed by Nynaeve.
