Chapter 30 - Children of Shadow

Summary

Perrin and Egwene hide from a pursuing party of Children of the Light beneath the massive hand of an Artur Hawkwing statue, aided by Elyas Machera and his wolves who drive the horsemen away with guerrilla tactics. The pursuit is eventually interrupted by the arrival of Lord Captain Bornhald and his lieutenant Child Byar, who discover the fugitives after Hopper attacks one of the riders. Perrin and Egwene are captured, tied, and brought into the Lord Captain's tent, where they are interrogated about their identity, their connection to wolves, and their knowledge of Shadar Logoth. Bornhald assesses their potential as Darkfriends but chooses to keep them alive, ordering them to be taken to Amador for judgment unless they confess to the Light before then, while Byar remains fiercely hostile and eager to execute them.

Characters

• Perrin — Hides under the statue with Egwene, fights Whitecloaks alongside Hopper, and is captured and tied up in Bornhald's tent, where he lies to the Lord Captain about their origins to protect his friends.
• Egwene — Hides under the statue with Perrin, is captured and bound in the tent, and helps construct a story about their journey to convince Bornhald of their innocence, though she remains wary of Byar's hatred.
• Bornhald / Geofram Bornhald (Lord Captain, the gray-haired man) — Leads the Children of the Light, encounters Perrin and Egwene hiding near the statue, captures them, and interrogates them in his tent, deciding to take them to Amador rather than killing them immediately while warning them of the Questioners.
• Byar / Child Byar (the gaunt-faced man, the tall man, Anointed of the Light) — Serves as Bornhald's lieutenant, reports the battle losses, attacks Perrin and Egwene with an axe when they speak defiantly, and argues vehemently for their execution as Darkfriends.
• Hopper — Jumps from the darkness to kill a Whitecloak who threatens Perrin, is pinned to the ground by lances, and dies while looking at Perrin.
• Bela — Perrin and Egwene hide under the stone slab as the Whitecloaks search the area.
