Chapter 42 - Remembrance of Dreams

Summary

The reunited companions gather in the Queen's Blessing’s library to find Mat cured of his dagger-induced paranoia but still in possession of the cursed weapon. Moiraine explains the severity of the dagger's binding and reveals that they cannot stay in Caemlyn due to the presence of Myrddraal and Children of the Light. The group learns of a critical threat to the Eye of the World, confirmed by both Loial and Perrin’s Tinker memories, prompting Moiraine to dismiss the original plan for Tar Valon. She reveals the existence of an Ogier Waygate beneath Caemlyn and tasks Loial with guiding them through the Ways to Fal Dara, despite Loial’s vehement warning that the Ways are swallowed by the Shadow.

Characters

  • Rand — Rand leads his friends into the library and explains Loial's identity to the amazed group. He listens to the discussion about the Eye of the World and his own dreams with Ba'alzamon, confirming the threat to the world and his friends. He questions Moiraine about the names of past heroes mentioned by the Dark One.
  • Perrin — Perrin sits quietly with amber-colored eyes, displaying a resigned demeanor. He breaks the silence to ask Loial about the stedding havens and later connects the Tinkers' story of the Eye of the World with Ba'alzamon's threats. He confirms that the Dark One intended to use them and notes his own potential protection through his connection to the wolves.
  • Mat — Mat appears briefly cured by Moiraine, acting with his usual swagger while concealing the Shadar Logoth dagger. He listens to the briefing on the Eye of the World and recalls that Ba'alzamon mentioned the name Davian, though he cannot remember other details clearly. He expresses his fear of having the Dark One inside his head again.
  • Egwene — Egwene is present in the library, initially gawking at Loial before listening to the discussion. She confirms the Tinkers' account of the Aiel dying and the warning about the Eye of the World. She is seen crying softly at the end of the chapter, comforted by Nynaeve.
  • Nynaeve (the Wisdom) — Nynaeve comforts a crying Egwene and listens to the grim news about the Eye of the World. She sharply rebukes Moiraine for frightening the group with talk of the Pattern and the Dark One's power. She stands with the women as Moiraine outlines the new plan to escape via the Ways.
  • Moiraine / Moiraine Sedai — Moiraine appears with the cured Mat and commands the group's attention with her dominant presence. She confirms that Mat still has the dagger but has been cleansed of its immediate taint. She reveals the threat to the Eye of the World and the necessity of reaching it before Trollocs, ordering Loial to guide them through the Ogier Waygate despite his warnings.
  • Lan — Lan stands behind Moiraine and Mat upon their arrival, watching the group silently. After Moiraine assigns the task of finding the Waygate to Loial, Lan vanishes from the room to ensure they are not taken unaware.
  • Loial — Loial is sprawled on a couch reading with a cat on his stomach. He answers questions about the stedding and shares a story about a man who fled Stedding Shangtai with a warning about the Eye of the World. He confirms he knows the Songs of Growing and the Ways, but vehemently refuses to lead the group into the Ways, stating they will die or be swallowed by the Shadow.
  • a_small_black_cat_with_white_feet (a small black cat with white feet) — A small black cat with white feet is curled half-asleep on Loial's stomach while he reads. It is gently set on the floor by Loial when the guests enter.
