Chapter 29 - Eyes Without Pity

Summary

Perrin al'Vere, Egwene al'Vere, and Elyas Machera, accompanied by the wolf Dapple and Bela, continue their desperate flight across the rolling plains, evading the sweeping flocks of ravens that serve as the Dark One's eyes. Elyas leads them erratically to avoid detection, eventually guiding them into a stedding where the land is protected from the Shadow's influence and the One Power. Inside the stedding, Elyas reveals the location as Artur Hawkwing's Eye, explaining the history of the fallen High King and the monument that stands there, while Perrin battles his own dark impulses and Egwene processes the sudden safety and the mysteries of the Ogier havens.

Characters

  • Perrin — Perrin suffers from exhaustion and nightmares, tracking the ravens with Elyas. He enters the stedding, drinks from the pool, and listens to Elyas's tale of Artur Hawkwing, struggling with his identity and fear.
  • Egwene — Egwene rides Bela through the flight from the ravens, using her sling to save Perrin. She enters the stedding, noting the strange peace and the monument of Artur Hawkwing's Eye, and questions Elyas about the history of the stone carving.
  • Elyas — Elyas drives the group forward with relentless pace to evade the ravens, using his knowledge of the land to guide them to the stedding. He reveals the monument as Artur Hawkwing's Eye and recounts the history of the High King and the lost city.
