Chapter 28 - Footprints in Air

Summary

Nynaeve, Moiraine, and Lan arrive at Whitebridge, crossing the legendary White Bridge which Nynaeve finds terrifyingly fragile. In the town square, they observe widespread destruction from a recent fire and interview terrified locals, learning that a man was meddling with the One Power and that a boat with a gleeman had fled downriver. After a silent meal in a fearful inn, they encounter a boastful militiaman who leaves upon seeing Lan's presence. Lan and Moiraine confirm they sensed the boys' recent emotional distress in the town but cannot pinpoint their direction without their tokens; Lan reveals a Myrddraal was also present. Despite Nynaeve's demands to search for Egwene immediately, Moiraine insists they must first find the boy whose token she can still track, leading the group to depart Whitebridge for Caemlyn.

Characters

  • Nynaeve / Wisdom (the Wisdom) — Nynaeve rides with Moiraine and Lan, marveling at the White Bridge while secretly judging the Aes Sedai's calm demeanor. She interrogates townsfolk about the fires and a fleeing boat, then confronts Moiraine about her priorities regarding Egwene and the boys before they depart for Caemlyn.
  • Moiraine (Aes Sedai) — Moiraine leads the group across the White Bridge and into Whitebridge, using her empathy to gather information from distressed locals. She explains her inability to track the boys without their tokens, reveals a Myrddraal's presence, and asserts her plan to find the one boy she can sense before searching for the others.
  • Lan (Warder) — Lan scouts the path and rides alongside Moiraine and Nynaeve. He intimidates a militiaman into leaving and informs Moiraine and Nynaeve that a Myrddraal was recently in Whitebridge, causing the group to leave immediately.
  • Aldieb — Aldieb is Moiraine's white mare, ridden by Moiraine as she crosses the White Bridge and rides into Whitebridge.
  • Militiaman (soldier, red-uniformed man) — A militiaman in red uniform and a peaked helmet enters the inn and demands the group's identity and business. He leaves abruptly after being intimidated by Lan's glare.
