Mat lies unconscious in a horse litter, breathing with a dry rasp, while a mysterious leather sack is taken from his feet by Verin. He is hurriedly carried away by guards to a secluded location due to his dangerous illness, left behind as the others are confined.
Chapter 18 - Healing
Mat
Mat lies unconscious and gaunt on a stone table, his hand clenched around the Shadar Logoth dagger. During the Healing, he arches his back and shouts commands in the Old Tongue as Manetheren soldiers, commanding the Aes Sedai to release him. When the dagger is sealed in a box, he collapses, and Siuan declares he is as well as can be expected, requiring only rest and food.
Chapter 19 - Awakening

Mat acorda e descobre-se em um quarto luxuoso, recordando memórias fragmentadas de batalhas de sua vida passada e de sua recente doença. Chapter 24 - Scouting and Discoveries

Chapter 30 - The First Toss

Mat Cauthon localiza Thom Merrilin em uma estalagem em Tar Valon, pede comida e vinho e o questiona sobre o paradeiro de Rand al'Thor e Moiraine. Chapter 32 - The First Ship

Mat Cauthon uses a forged Amyrlin order and gold to trick the captain and crew of the Gray Gull into allowing passage and stealing the captain's cabin. He engages in conversation with Captain Mallia, subtly reinforcing the captain's bias against the White Tower, and later kills three assassins who board the ship at night to stop him.
Chapter 40 - A Hero in the Night

Mat watches the refugee crisis in Aringill, donates coins to a starving family, and struggles to find lodging until winning a dice wager with Jeral Florry for access to the stable. He leaps from the hayloft to fight off four attackers pursuing Aludra, accepts fireworks as payment for his help, and offers her his own gold before departing into the rain.
Chapter 44 - Hunted
Mat
Mat descansa ao lado de uma fogueira com Thom e examina um foguete de Aludra, abrindo-o para encontrar pedras. Ele e Thom são emboscados por assassinos; Mat arremessa o foguete para criar uma distração e luta com seu bastão. Chapter 45 - Caemlyn

Mat arrives in Caemlyn with Thom Merrilin and attempts to deliver a letter from Elayne to the Queen, but is rebuffed and chased away by a fat Queen's Guard officer who suspects him of being a Darkfriend or trickster. He returns to the Queen's Blessing inn, interacts with the stableman Ramey and the cook Coline, and finds Thom and Basel Gill in the library, where he decides to leave the letter with Gill and attempt to enter the palace by other means using his luck.
Chapter 46 - A Message Out of the Shadow

Mat Cauthon scales the Palace wall, overhears Lord Gaebril plotting to kill the three girls, and is escorted by Tallanvor to Morgase. He delivers the letter, accepts payment from Gaebril, and retreats after hearing Gaebril's plans for war.
Chapter 47 - To Race the Shadow
Mat
Mat walks through the palace with Tallanvor, feigning ignorance to evade Gaebril's suspicion, and later rushes to the inn to report Gaebril's assassination plot to Thom and Gill before packing to flee to Tear.
Chapter 49 - A Storm in Tear
Mat — aliases: boy (menino), farmer
Mat arrives in Tear via the Swift, plays stones with Thom, and kills the assassin Comar after exposing his cheating dice. Realizing his luck is most effective in random situations, he begins a random search of inns with Thom to find Egwene and the others.
Chapter 52 - In Search of a Remedy
Mat / Mat Cauthon / Matrim Cauthon
Mat supports the sick Thom Merrilin to Mother Guenna's house, where he learns the locations of Egwene, Nynaeve, and Elayne from the Wisdom. After punching a wall in frustration and giving Guenna money for Thom's care, he leaves the gleeman behind and sets out to infiltrate the Stone of Tear to rescue the women.
Chapter 54 - Into the Stone
Mat — aliases: gambler, nameless youngling, nameless one
Mat Cauthon sneaks across the rooftops of Tear, studies the Stone of Tear, and climbs the city wall to plant a bundle of fireworks in an arrowslit, causing a massive explosion that widens the opening and allows him to enter the fortress while fighting off Defenders with Juilin Sandar's help.
Chapter 55 - What Is Written in Prophecy

Mat entra nas salas de tortura e no corredor, encontrando Amico Nagoyin inconsciente. Ele recupera sua chave, abre a cela e descobre Egwene, Nynaeve e Elayne no interior. Ele as insta a fugir e, após Nynaeve golpear Amico para quebrar sua influência sobre o escudo, o grupo se prepara para escapar com Juilin Sandar. Mat segue as mulheres para fora da câmara, determinado a resgatá-las apesar de sua raiva.
Chapter 56 - People of the Dragon

Mat observes the crowd from an arrowslit and later stands in the chamber with the group, rolling his eyes at their fixation on seals while trying to comprehend the magical revelations and prophecies. He questions Moiraine about the prophecies and expresses relief that the Stone has fallen, only to be rebuked when he claims the Dark One is dead. He remains silent as Berelain delivers her message and listens to Moiraine's assertion that his role in the Pattern is far from over.
