Chapter 3 - Friends and Enemies
Mat / Mat Cauthon
Mat kommt aus einem Würfelspiel, trägt seine Kleidung aus Zwei Strömen und hält heimlich seinen vergifteten Dolch aus Shadar Logoth in der Hand. Er versucht, Rand bezüglich der Aes Sedai zu beruhigen, verlässt jedoch das Zimmer mit Perrin, nachdem Rand ihn feindselig abgewiesen hat, während Rand entschlossen im Raum bleibt, um allein zu gehen.
Chapter 6 - Dark Prophecy
Mat / Matrim Cauthon — aliases: the boy (der Junge)
Mat liegt bewusstlos und verletzt in der Kerkerzelle neben Egwene, nachdem er seinen vergifteten Dolch im Chaos verloren hat. Moiraine stuft seinen Zustand als schwerwiegender ein als den von Egwene und befiehlt, ihn zur Amyrlin-Sitz zu bringen.
Chapter 7 - Blood Calls Blood

Mat liegt bewusstlos im Krankenhaus, erholt sich von den Auswirkungen des Shadar-Logoth-Dolches. Er erwacht kurz, um Perrin zur Kenntnis zu nehmen, und fällt dann wieder in einen tiefen Schlaf.
Chapter 10 - The Hunt Begins

Mat remains at the rear of the column with Perrin, eventually crossing the river to search the empty village. He finds no one inside the houses and later joins the group at the site of the dead Myrddraal.
Chapter 11 - Glimmers of the Pattern

Mat bursts into the clearing to see the banner, expresses horror at Rand's potential identity as the Dragon and the danger posed by his ability to channel, and eventually decides to sleep away from Rand due to fear.
Chapter 14 - Wolfbrother
Mat — aliases: only sane one left
Mat remains suspicious of Perrin’s sudden claim of sniffer skills, mocking him as crazy while worrying about the missing Rand. He rides with the party, voicing disparaging remarks until Verin arrives, then notes that Verin is likely searching for Rand rather than the Horn.
Chapter 28 - A New Thread in the Pattern

Mat reitet mit der Gruppe, jongliert mit Bällen und sieht blass aus. Er bemerkt, dass Urien wie Rand aussieht und fragt laut, ob Rand ein Aiel ist, während er vor sich hin murmelt, als er das auf dem Boden gezeichnete Symbol der Aes Sedai sieht.
Chapter 30 - Daes Dae’mar

Mat arrives at the burning inn with his bow strung across his back, looking pale but grinning weakly as he rejoins Rand in the street.
Chapter 31 - On the Scent
Mat
Mat arrives at the fire scene and later juggles boiled eggs while eating at the inn. He questions Rand about their disappearance and the loss of the dagger, and watches Verin with suspicion as she discusses the Horn and the sa'angreal.
Chapter 32 - Dangerous Words
Mat — aliases: your manservant, manservant
Mat pretends to be Rand's servant to infiltrate the kitchens and locate the Shadar Logoth dagger. Later, he is claimed to have fallen and twisted his knee to provide Rand with an excuse to leave the gathering early.
Chapter 33 - A Message from the Dark
Mat — aliases: my Lord (mein Herr)
Mat acts as a servant to infiltrate the kitchens and locate the dagger's scent, though he fails to find it. He learns of the Waygate and later resolves to go to Toman Head, unaware that Verin has informed Rand that his body is wasting away due to the Shadar Logoth dagger's taint.
Chapter 35 - Stedding Tsofu
Mat
Mat kommt abgemagert an und wird zweimal von Verin geheilt. Er neckt Loial wegen Erith, äußert Angst vor den Lanzen der Aiel und diskutiert später mit Rand und Perrin die Möglichkeit, dass die Aiel Rand jagen, bevor er auf Loials Heiratsängste reagiert.
Chapter 36 - Among the Elders

Mat hinterfragt die Behandlung durch die Ältesten und macht sich unerbittlich über die Blüte lustig, die er von Erith erhalten hat. Als das Waygate abgelehnt wird, sitzt er auf der Brüstung mit dem Kopf in den Händen, doch hebt er den Kopf voller Hoffnung, als Hurin vorschlägt, einen Portalstein zu nutzen, um ihn vor dem Dahinsiechen zu bewahren.
Chapter 37 - What Might Be
Mat
Mat looks eager to use the Stone, makes a weak joke, and is later huddled in a ball with his arms around his head during the power surge. He grabs Rand's coat to swear he will never betray him, and eventually stands up to ride west, looking ill but moving spryly.
Chapter 41 - Disagreements
Mat
Mat zittert und klagt über das Wetter, verspottet die Vorstellung von Seanchan-Monstern, fürchtet sie aber im Stillen. Er stellt sich auf Hurins Seite bei der Suche, da Hurin die besten Chancen hat, den Shadar-Logoth-Dolch zu finden, der benötigt wird, um ihn zu heilen.
Chapter 44 - Five Will Ride Forth
Mat
Mat wears baggy trousers stuffed into his boots and expresses impatience to leave the village, later joining the tracking party and confirming they followed Fain's trail almost to Falme.
Chapter 45 - Blademaster
Mat
Mat identifies the location of the Shadar Logoth dagger and retrieves both the Horn and the dagger from Turak's room. He kills a Seanchan soldier with the tainted dagger, causing the man to die in agony, and fights alongside the group during their escape.
Chapter 47 - The Grave Is No Bar to My Call
Mat
Mat mounts his horse and carries the Horn of Valere and the Shadar Logoth dagger. He debates with Rand about returning to Falme before blowing the Horn of Valere, which summons the Heroes of the Horn. He rides into battle with the heroes, sounding the Horn and laughing despite the danger.
