Lan arrives with Moiraine, wearing a cloak that shifts color and blending into the shadows. He walks silently by Moiraine's side, his cold blue gaze weighing the youths, and accompanies her away from the inn without speaking to the villagers.
Chapter 7 - Out of the Woods

Lan squats beside a dead Trolloc, removing a metal badge from its shoulder. He accompanies Moiraine as they help destroy the remaining Trollocs, glares at Rand for his urgency, and asserts that Rand's father may not be worth saving compared to Moiraine's condition.
Chapter 8 - A Place of Safety

Lan sits quietly by the bed, commenting on Rand's sword and explaining the nature of Myrddraal and Halfmen. He reveals that the Trollocs attacked only two farms and the forge, indicating the attack was purposeful and targeted at specific young men rather than the whole village.
Chapter 9 - Tellings of the Wheel

Lan enters the room to urgently summon Rand, warning him of trouble outside. He waits impatiently in the hall and later at the inn door, eventually pulling Rand and Mat out to the stableyard to leave the inn.
Chapter 10 - Leavetaking

Lan inspects the horses and sternly warns the youths that they must be willing to use any weapon to survive. He leads the group out of the stableyard, halts them to avoid a patrol, identifies a Draghkar in the sky, and commands them to take to the North Road.
Chapter 11 - The Road to Taren Ferry

Lan leads the group at the head of the line, refusing to stop at Watch Hill. He identifies the Draghkar and commands the group to continue fleeing, later bargaining with Master Hightower for passage.
Chapter 12 - Across the Taren

Lan leads the group off their horses and guides them through the fog to the ferry landing, where he ensures the party displays their weapons to Master Hightower. He negotiates the crossing, pays the ferryman and his helpers, and watches as the ferry is destroyed before leading the group to their resting place in the woods.
Chapter 13 - Choices

Lan scours the path ahead, teaches the boys sword and axe fighting, and insists on secrecy and slow travel. He exchanges aliases with Moiraine, enters Baerlon disguised in ordinary clothes, and is greeted by the innkeeper Fitch as Master Andra.
Chapter 14 - The Stag and Lion

Lan scouts the inn's common room to gather intelligence, finding reports of Logain's victory and Whitecloak agitation, and later checks the dining room door to ensure it is safe from eavesdroppers. He sternly reprimands Mat and the others in the bathhouse for nearly exposing their connection to Trollocs, warning them that the Children of the Light would view such talk as an admission of being Darkfriends.
Chapter 16 - The Wisdom

Lan offers Nynaeve wine, takes up guard across the hallway while Moiraine questions her inside, and silently signals for the boys to leave the room.
Chapter 17 - Watchers and Hunters

Lan guards the group and leads the escape. He confronts the Watchman and Whitecloaks at the gate, then rides with the party out of the city.
Chapter 18 - The Caemlyn Road

Lan scouts ahead, confirms the size of the pursuing army, and charges a Myrddraal in single combat while his horse Mandarb fights alongside him. After the battle, he argues with Moiraine about her strength and leads the group into Shadar Logoth to escape the pursuers.
Chapter 19 - Shadow’s Waiting

Lan carries Moiraine into the safehouse, scouts outside, and returns to reveal that Trollocs and Myrddraal are driving a massive horde into Shadar Logoth, forcing the party to abandon their ward and cross the river immediately.
Chapter 21 - Listen to the Wind

Lan dismounts to inspect the ground, reporting to Moiraine that the Trollocs and Halfmen have departed. He bars Nynaeve from approaching Moiraine when she arrives, then prepares the horses for departure while remaining largely silent about the discussion regarding the Pattern and Nynaeve's abilities.

Lan scouts the path and rides with the group, displaying a grim demeanor upon smelling the lingering presence of a Halfman in Whitebridge. Lan guides the group to the Whitecloak camp and explains the situation to Nynaeve. He ensures the horses are secure, then disappears into the darkness.
Chapter 38 - Rescue

Lan ambushes the prisoners' guards and Byar, silencing them without killing them, and leads Perrin and Egwene out of the camp under Moiraine's lightning storm. He reunites with the group, confronts Nynaeve about her oath, and discusses the threat of the Dark One with Perrin regarding Rand and Mat's safety.

Lan brings up the rear as they enter the cellar, climbs back up to pull the cellar doors shut, and leads Mandarb through the Waygate. He rides on the side of the Ogier through the dark, and dismounts midday to distribute food while keeping time.

Lan rides ahead, approaching the Guiding where runes are discovered. He leaps his horse Mandarb through the gate first, saving the group by forcing open the stone wedges of the door with his shoulder.
Chapter 46 - Fal Dara

Lan rides ahead, leading the group into Fal Dara and enforcing the local custom of exposing faces. He meets with Lord Agelmar, expressing his despair over the destruction of Malkier but remaining steadfast in his duty. He stands by Moiraine as she confronts Fain.
Chapter 47 - More Tales of the Wheel

Lan stands silently at Moiraine's heels as she returns from the cells. He is the subject of Lord Agelmar's story regarding the fall of Malkier and his own destiny as the Uncrowned King, though he denies his titles.

Lan rides Mandarb at the head of the group, setting a hard pace and warning them of the Blight's dangers. He helps saddle the horses at the camp and later stands guard through the night, sharing a quiet, personal exchange with Nynaeve about his kingship and her future.
Chapter 49 - The Dark One Stirs

Lan leads the group out of the camp and into the Blight, wearing steel-backed gauntlets. A massive creature leaps at the group, but Mat’s arrow pierces its eye, causing it to fall short. He repeatedly charges into the trees to cut down attackers, sustaining wounds that Moiraine heals, and urges the group to ride furiously to escape the pursuing Worms.
