Dr. Chilton allows Pollyanna to visit Pendleton, describing her cheerfulness as a tonic, and drives her home while marveling at her unique worldview. He is moved to tears by her comment that his profession is the 'gladdest' of all, feeling a renewed sense of purpose in his lonely life.

Chapter 29 - Through an Open Window

Dr. Chilton visits John Pendleton to reveal that he has the knowledge to cure Pollyanna's paralysis but is prevented from seeing her by a fifteen-year-old quarrel with Miss Polly and professional pride. He explains that he cannot enter the Harrington home without a direct request from Miss Polly, which he believes she will never make.

Dr. Chilton enters the room with Dr. Warren and speaks emotionally to Pollyanna about her having done a 'gladdest job' that morning, his eyes shining with adoration which Miss Polly witnesses before she leaves.
