Chapter 1 - Marseille – Arrival

Danglars emerges from his cabin to challenge Dantès before Morrel, accusing him of neglecting his duty by stopping at Elba. He attempts to undermine Dantès's credibility by hinting at a secret letter, then withdraws as Dantès departs.
Chapter 2 - Father and Son

Danglars meets Caderousse on the street and interrogates him about Dantès. Upon hearing that Dantès has become arrogant about his promotion, Danglars vows to prevent the appointment and directs Caderousse to observe Dantès's encounter with Mercédès from a distance.
Chapter 3 - Les Catalans

Danglars observes Fernand's anguish from afar, feigning sympathy while plotting against Edmond. He silently resolves to interfere with Dantès's happiness, delivers a poisoned toast to 'Captain Edmond', and watches the lovers leave with a sinister smile.
Chapter 4 - The Plot

Danglars manipulates the despairing Fernand by suggesting that prison, rather than death, is the best way to separate him from Mercédès. He drafts an anonymous denunciation letter accusing Dantès of carrying a Bonapartist letter, writes it in his left hand to disguise his handwriting, and intentionally leaves it behind for Fernand to find after intoxicating Caderousse.
Chapter 5 - The Betrothal

Danglars feigns surprise at the arrest while privately believing the plot to have succeeded due to Fernand's involvement. He lies to Morrel about his suspicions and successfully persuades the shipowner to let him take command of the Pharaon, thereby assuming responsibility for its supervision and business affairs while celebrating his own potential promotion to captain.
Chapter 9 - The Evening of the Betrothal
Danglars
Danglars is alone and happy, having successfully taken revenge and secured his position on the Pharaon. He goes to bed at his usual hour and sleeps peacefully.
