Chapter 49 - Haydée

Summary

The Count of Monte Cristo visits Haydée in her Oriental-style suite to discuss her impending integration into Parisian society. He informs her that she is free to leave and go out as she wishes, with servants Ali and Myrto at her command, but strictly forbids her from revealing the name of her illustrious father or her past. Haydée refuses to leave him, declaring her love and stating she would die if he were to die, assuring him that she feels only sadness, love, and gratitude when alone. The Count accepts her devotion with tenderness before departing in his carriage to visit Maximilien Morrel and his family.

Characters
