- Count / Monte Cristo / Edmond Dantès / Edmond (the count, Excellency, Count of Monte Cristo) — The Count welcomes Morrel to his island home, leading him to a grotto where he offers a lethal substance. He is moved by Haydée's devotion to abandon his plan to die, and subsequently sends Morrel and Valentine away in his yacht with a letter detailing his gifts and final wisdom before departing for Rome with Haydée.
- Morrel / Maximilien Morrel (the young man, Maximilien) — Morrel arrives on the island intending to commit suicide, but is revived by Valentine's appearance. He accepts the Count's gift of fortune and instruction to live, and departs with Valentine for Leghorn.
- Mademoiselle de Villefort / Valentine de Villefort (Valentine, sister, the young woman) — Valentine appears in the grotto, revealing she had previously faked her death. She is reunited with Morrel and accepts the Count's gift of her inheritance, preparing to follow him to Leghorn under Jacopo's care.
