The one-eyed cashier maintains his unshakeable faith in Morrel's credit until the final collapse. He guides the Englishman to the study and later distributes the remaining funds to the sailors at Morrel's direction.

Coclès appears broken by the certainty of the firm's ruin. He waits in the antechamber for the representative of Thomson and French but is instead surprised by Julie's arrival and the subsequent news of the Pharaon's return.
