Chapter 32 - Awakening

Summary

Franz awakens on the island of Monte Cristo after a night of hashish-induced hallucinations, finding his host, Sinbad, has departed by yacht. After failing to find the secret entrance to Sinbad's palace, Franz finishes his meal and departs for Florence, where he arrives in Rome to reunite with Albert de Morcerf. They secure lodging in an apartment adjacent to that of the mysterious Count of Monte Cristo and attempt to procure a carriage for the upcoming carnival.

Characters

• Franz (Your Excellency, Milord) — Franz awakens in a cave on Monte Cristo, disoriented from hashish but physically refreshed. He searches the cavern for the secret entrance to Sinbad's palace, fails, and later watches his host's yacht depart before leaving the island with his guide Gaetano for Florence and eventually Rome.
• Gaetano (master) — Gaetano, the boat captain, guides Franz to the island and serves as his liaison with Sinbad. He explains Sinbad's itinerary, provides a torch for Franz's search, and later transports Franz off the island.
• Sinbad (Milord Sinbad, the chief of the smugglers) — Sinbad (Edmond Dantès) is seen from a distance by Franz waving goodbye and firing a cannon salute from his yacht as it steers toward Porto Vecchio.
• Albert / de Morcerf (Your Excellency, Albert de Morcerf) — Albert de Morcerf meets Franz in Rome. He is eager to secure a barouche for the carnival, becomes frustrated by the innkeeper's inability to provide horses, and goes to bed after dinner.
• Pastrini (Signor Pastrini) — Signor Pastrini, the innkeeper of the Hôtel de Londres in Rome, greets Franz and Albert, scolds his staff, and informs them that no carriages are available for the carnival, leaving them to find their own transport.
