Chapter 24 - Dazzled

Summary

Edmond Dantès arrives on the island of Monte Cristo and, following the logical deductions provided by Abbé Faria, locates the heavy boulder hiding the entrance to Cardinal Spada's treasure. Using gunpowder left by Jacopo, he blasts the rock aside and descends into a hidden cavern system. After overcoming his doubt and searching through two caves, he discovers an iron-bound oak chest buried in the corner of the second cavern. He opens the chest to find compartments filled with gold écus, ingots, and diamonds. Overwhelmed by the magnitude of his fortune and his newfound freedom, Dantès spends the night on the island, verifying his wealth and feeling the surreal transition from prisoner to the possessor of unimaginable riches.
