Chapter 15 - Number 34 and Number 27

Summary

Deprived of all hope after four years of solitary confinement, Edmond Dantès resolves to starve himself to death but is inadvertently revived by the scent of food brought by his jailer. Sensing a digging sound from the adjacent cell, he engages in a tense dialogue with the unseen neighbor, eventually confirming that the other occupant is also a prisoner who has made a directional error in his escape attempt. The two prisoners establish a bond of trust, and Dantès retrieves an iron pot handle to continue his own labor, only to discover that his neighbor has successfully tunneled through the floor of their shared wall and emerges into his cell.
